Fruit From The Rind

Living life through recollections of the past
Misty moon shadows and I stand aghast
Visions like these can never last
Just lash me to that flowing mast!

A prisoner of a vast frothy sea
That boils beneath the deck and me
A salty breeze that tries to set me free
Despite the past that persists tormentingly,

From the vague distance I hear
A familiar voice from the past so clear
Beckoning me like a phantom that comes too near
Shifitng shapes into what you can never be my Dear,

The past walks behind me I can hear foot falls
So gentle yet there like a distant rain squall
Washing clean the blood from emotions mauled
Until once again that familiar voice of the past calls,

I see in the mirror dark clouds in brush strokes of gray
Just another patch of reflection on this somber day
Living with the ghosts of the past they say
Things were not really meant to be this way,

Mary Mary you left our lives behind
Thought I could always anticipate your kind
But in truth I was really just flying blind
Anguish always separates the fruit from the rind.

Just thought I'd mention that you should try writing some free verse poetry.

I, as a person who can't "poetic rhyme scheme/fixed form poetry" myself out of a wet paper bag, find I can get the point across better because I'm thinking more about meaning instead of "rhyming" (my Suzy taught me that).

So come on, dude...  let your Allen Ginsberg freak flag fly free!  FFS, you could become the next Maya Angelou...  well...  if you were a woman...  and a person of color...  and not such a right-wing lunatic.

Well Gosh Safe Bet I'm not sure how to take that mixed compliment but I began writing poetry in high school inspired by the lyrics of such bands as King Crimson, Pink Floyd, ELP, and others filling drawers in my bedroom full of them, but then I was not original only influenced by the sentiments of the time. Now I speak more from personal experience and sadly there is a beauty in personal tragedy it tends to make some of us focus. I remember Neil Young once saying that he wrote his best material while heart broken and I agree. I'm really not a lunatic right wing but I am a constitutional conservative when at one time I was an oblivious liberal. Fatherhood and being a self employed small businessman clarified things for me.

"Just lash me to that flowing mast!"

Not bad Captain Vega ...

And, you as Ginsberg, "cough" ---

"I saw the most tin foil connected minds of my generation employed by madness, scared to death of being naked,

dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix,
devil minded "fake hipsters" with long Austin Beards (you might try one Tom Petty) dreaming for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo of White Supremacy ... ad nauseum ...

Funny that you should mention Neil Young.  A friend of mine just sent me a link to his entire music archives.  Too cool!

ELP Lyrics

”I’m perfect! Are you?”

not into Pink Floyd. Saw the other two in concert. Wrote a post when Emerson died. If you’re a drummer following Carl Palmer and Bill Bruford, you had serious influences. They’re possibly the two best rock drummers I ever saw.

I’m a parent in a small business. Neither made me conservative.

Maui Yep Neil Young's Cowgirl in the Sand reminds me of a few girls in high school I wanted to date so bad.
