Fleas in Arizona Test Positive for Bubonic Plague

Fleas in Arizona Test Positive for Bubonic Plague:  Fleas in two Arizona counties have tested positive for carrying bubonic plague, an infectious disease that took the lives of millions of people in the Middle Ages.  Health officials are urging Arizona residents to - if possible - avoid these fleas and ticks like the plague.

Kentucky Group to Protest Solar Eclipse:  An ad-hoc organization called “Kentuckians for Coal” says it plans to protest all the attention the upcoming solar eclipse is generating because it helps promote solar at the expense of the coal industry.  Good point, after all - a mine is a terrible thing to waste.

Alabama Finally Passes Bestiality Law:  The Alabama State Senate has voted 20-1 to make bestiality (zoophilia) a misdemeanor criminal offense punishable by up to one year in jail.  The one senator who voted against the bill was at Petco and couldn’t be reached for comment.

this

is bacterial bobonic (bubonic plague is derived from the Greek word βουβών, meaning "groin")

but some

claim that a hemorrhagic fever, similar to the Ebola virus, caused the Black Death. And others blame anthrax or say that some now-extinct disease was the culprit.

Bubonic plague just doesn't make sense, they argue. The symptoms, the high mortality rate, the speed at which the disease spread, and the way the disease spread -- none of it jibes with typical bubonic plague.

.

Whatever it was/is/ will be (gotta give credit to genetic engineers who possess/ are possessed by a genocidal proclivity and/or  need for job security), bacteria and viruses got a leg up on humans and creatures upon whom they feast and whose generational timespans average in years rather than hours and days, like a virus and bacterium*.

---

Yersinia pestis: The bacteria that causes the bubonic plague which in the year 541 (as the Black Death) and later in the Middle Ages decimated Europe. The effects of the plague are described in the nursery rhyme "We all fall down."

Y. pestis mainly infects rats and other rodents which are the prime reservoir for the bacteria. Fleas are the prime vectors carrying the bacteria from one species to another. They bite rodents infected with Y. pestis, then they bite people and so transmit the disease to them.

Transmission of the plague to people can also occur from eating infected animals such as squirrels. Once someone has the plague, they can transmit it to another person via aerosol droplets.

Plague occurs in the U.S. It is treatable with antibiotics but, if not treated promptly, can promptly lead to death.

Yersinia is named after the Swiss bacteriologist Alexandre-Emile-Jean Yersin (1863-1943) who identified it in 1894 after a trip to Hong Kong looking for the agent that was killing thousands of people in southern China. The bacteria was also discovered at the same time by the Japanese bacteriologist Shibasaburo Kitasako.
