As attracted to chocolate and sweet things as I am it might be surprising that I'm not the hugest fan of eclairs. I think it is that the vanilla custard most people use is a bit too "gushy".
The ones I do like are from Scafuri Italian Bakery in South Chicago. They make some that are filled with a pretty stiff Chiboust creme that has chopped pralines and raspberries in it. One of those and a cup of their espresso (imported Italian Lavazza, 'o course) gets your day started right!
The custard tends to be cloyingly sweet.
It’s pretty good and about half the size of a football.
I am not a connoisseur of eclairs. I like them all. In fact custard based deserts are my favorites; creme brulee, flan, really all of them.
Maybe that is desserts?
A guy I do business with and I had to see some people from a school system in southern Maryland this morning. We arrived early and were looking for a place to get a cup of coffee and maybe breakfast. He found this diner. We walked in and the first thing we saw was that case. Had to try one. We split it in half. Each half was bigger than any eclair I’d ever seen. It was physically heavy.
Ever since Lorianne updated the site last, I can finally publish pictures directly from IPad or IPhone. I put this post together on the spot.
I’ve only had Napoleon I really I loved at a bakery in Spring Valley, NY, called Pakula’s. It was also my first Napoleon. Heavy on the custard, ligher on the crust.
I've never had an eclair.... or a Napoleon..?? Is it as sweet as it looks?
Bear claws and chocolate croissants, the bakery I used to love specialized in...
