Not Reindeer

Just a herd of elk in the middle of the highway a few years ago as I came around the curve.

Fortunately, there was time to brake with a bit of screeching (both me and the brakes).

The elk didn’t even look up.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Elk had a very shiny nose

If the Highway Patrol ever caught him (on the road)

Into the breathalyzer he would blows!

Then one foggy Christmas eve, Anna along did come...

She slammed her brakes, shook her fist and screamed,

"Get the hell off the road you drunken bum!"

deer and moose and turkeys and ducks and whatnot on the side of highways make me talk to myself.

these animals are so FUCKING ANNOYING! beautiful and idiotic in their indifference to cars and trucks.  why isn't darwin kicking in?  I mean highways have been around a long time.

I love all animals, and I don't want to kill or break one.

(@Amy: Snork. You owe me a keyboard.)

Around here, JT, we have deer. Lots and lots of deer, who are constantly on the move looking for food (not a lot of habitat, as you may recall) or ... um ... companionship, as it were. They are as dumb an animal as you can hope to find, and think nothing of jumping from ditches onto motorways, not unlike those elk. You'd think that Darwin would have had them sorted by now, but oh, no.

(Awfully tempting curve ahead for us motorcyclists....)

So, this post I also posted on medium and for some reason rather than the typical couple of views (I post there too, official disclaimer, to have a comment free version to send some folks), someone in Japan found this elk photo interesting and for whatever reason 100s of views from some Japanese app.  Hmmm.

I do love this photo and that day driving the old trusty mid-80s stick shift Beemer....

Yes. dumb as a post, they are, or at least are about the world of humans and highways and such. Pretty savvy about the world of elk, I suppose.

This highway is 101 in far Del Norte county - far north California, the land that time forgot, in many ways.

Bo, motorcyclists love our (extended) region!

....and so do those crazy self torturing bicyclists that seem to find such joy in grunting up the steepest hills they can find.

Boy, I'd love to just take off on a road trip today. Of course, I feel that way every day....

Back to work.
