Conservatives: Anti-Family, Anti-Christianity, Anti-Country

This post is dedicated to Doc Vega, who inspired it. Every once in a while I get an urge to attempt to approximate his style. This is one of those days. I’m not a perceptive enough writer to really get it right, but I think I’m at least in the neighborhood. Obviously, we do not share viewpoints – I am not interested in approximating his content. I’d rather hold down my lunch.

I write about the greatest danger facing America today: Conservatives. Not True Conservatives – there are hardly any of those left and those who are left are mostly disoriented, having nowhere to turn – but Republican Conservatives. As a group, they are anti-family, anti-Christianity, and anti-country.

Conservatives will tell you that one of the greatest threats to the American family is the high number of children born out of wedlock, and yet they do everything in their power to increase that number! They oppose sex education in the schools, even though sex education has been proven to not only increase the use of contraceptives but to reduce promiscuity. They oppose abortion, forcing young women to raise children when they are not ready and are often unmarried, creating more single-parent households, creating circumstances that make raising children far more difficult. And they oppose efforts to make contraception as widely available as possible, attacking Planned Parenthood and attempting to facilitate the elimination of insurance coverage of contraceptives.

In the late seventies and early eighties, LGBT people were coming out of the closet in droves and gay male promiscuity became legendary.  One of the consequences of this was the rapid spread of AIDS. Partially in response, thousands in the LGBT community decided to adopt more traditional family values, becoming monogamous, getting married, raising children. And what did conservatives do to these people adopting family values? Oppose their efforts! Prevent them from getting married, prevent them from being able to adopt children, callously preferring to leave children needing parents in institutions!

Christianity was created to follow Jesus of Nazareth. The New Testament describes his life. We know what he considered to be important. He constantly reached out to marginalized populations. He talked about helping those in need and he was very angry at those who put money before compassion, throwing moneylenders from the Temple and saying in frustration that it would be easier to get a camel through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. He detested self-righteous vigilance, saying “Let ye who is without sin cast the first stone.”

And what do conservatives do? Oppose him at every turn! They reject marginalized populations, trampling on their rights as much as possible. They reject those in need, saying that a government Of the People, By the People, and For the People has no business helping the People when they need help! And when they are forced to help the People, they want to make sure they and their friends profit by helping the People by privatizing everything in sight! They glorify wealth and take money from the poor and the middle class and give it to the rich, all in the name of creating jobs that the rich have no intention of creating, nor any real incentive for creating. They are defined by self-righteous vigilance, telling people what they shouldn’t do in Jesus’ name while ignoring Jesus’ values. They say they want a Christian country while doing everything in their power to create an anti-Christian country.

Conservative Catholics complain about their Pope, Pope Francis. Why? Because he follows Jesus’ values more closely than any Pope in the two thousand-year history of the Church. He refuses to live a wealthy life. He refuses to condemn those who are LGBT and counts a gay man among his closest friends. His priority is those at the bottom of the ladder. Catholics are blessed with better leadership than they have ever had, but conservative Catholics hope for a Pope that doesn’t follow Jesus so closely but instead follows their fundamentally anti-Christian values.

It has become almost universally true that if something is good for the country, conservatives oppose it, and if it’s bad for the country, they support it. As they claim to be pro-family while undermining the Family and claim to be Christian while undermining Christianity, they claim to be patriotic while undermining their country. Immigration has always helped America, providing us with loyal and grateful citizens, bringing scientific advancement to our shores, and even keeping our groceries affordable with cheap farm labor. What do conservatives do? Interfere with immigration at every turn, of course. Integrating minorities unites us as a country and strengthens us, so of course they divide us by publicizing myths about minorities, everything from Spanish becoming our national language to Sharia becoming our national law, neither of which is remotely likely even if we eventually end up with a Latino/Latina majority. And what they’ve done to keep Black people as a permanent underclass, costing America untold billions in all sorts of ways, could fill a library.

The poor and middle class are what keeps American businesses in business by buying their goods and services, and so conservatives support policies that take money out of the hands of American consumers to put it in the hands of the wealthy, where it will sit in bank accounts and financial instruments and not help America at all. Government services are expensive, and so conservatives want to make them more expensive by privatizing them, adding corporate profits to the public’s expenses, all in the name of mythical superior private sector efficiency. Conservatives opposed the GM bailout, which prevented putting untold numbers of Americans out of work; once the ripple effect is included, probably millions.

Global warming is a clear and present danger, with even the Pentagon treating it as a matter of national security, and so conservatives want to pretend it doesn’t exist, making up myths like that it’s a Chinese hoax when it was in fact first recognized by Exxon scientists in the 1970’s. Countries all around the world are trying to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy, and so what do conservatives do? Support the fossil fuel industry while undermining renewables, taking away a substantial American advantage in one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Conservatives get a three-fer: Damaging the American environment, costing us billions in potential income and God knows what in jobs, and tarnishing American leadership around the world!

And politics? They have managed to take a working Congress and turn it into a permanently gridlocked institution by elevating winning elections over governing the country while they’re in office. They have Gerrymandered large parts of America, intentionally taking away majority rule in our democracy. They have engaged in further voter suppression efforts, and that’s their term! And so a majority of nearly three million American voters still resulted in the will of the majority being ignored.

That wasn’t enough – they undermined democracy for more power in even more ways. They refused to even evaluate a sitting President’s Supreme Court nomination! And then they collaborated with a treasonous effort to allow Russia to interfere with our election, the latest thing being that the head of the House Intelligence Committee, currently investigating the Trump administration, went to inform the administration privately of developments without even sharing those developments with his own committee. And the Speaker of the House supports his staying on as head of the committee!

And the White House? That’s the greatest American disaster of all. They managed to get a President into office who isn’t qualified to shine Barack Obama’s shoes or carry Hillary Clinton’s luggage, a President who has closer ties with Russia than with his own Government, a President who treats the Presidency as his family’s premier business opportunity, a President who has raised national divisiveness to a Fine Art, a President who lies so often that the entire mainstream media points it out regularly, a President who has alienated nearly every ally we have, a President who treats what is perhaps America’s greatest danger and also America’s greatest business opportunity as a Chinese hoax, a President who is gutting the Federal Government of generations of experts and replacing them with loyalist hacks,  a President who is attempting to turn the Government into an instrument of the wealthy at the expense of 99% of Americans, a President who is making the United States an international laughingstock, a President who wears the biggest lie of all on his hat.

Conservatives are a menace to America, and those who support their efforts are traitors and fools.

There are a wide spectrum of Americans who identify themselves as Conservatives, many of whom regard themselves as small government fiscal conservatives who believe in the sanctity of individual rights and oppose any government interference in the private lives of American citizens or corporate businesses.  Many of them paradoxically oppose government sponsored prejudice while they would allow the religious or moral prejudices of business owners free reign.

To my mind the word conservative has been hijacked by Tea Party bigots and ideologues much the same as the world Islam has been hijacked by the lunatic fringe of al Qaeda, the Taliban and ISIS.  This illustrates how the paradox and hypocrisy runs amuck:

I saw one of his posts the other day and was thinking he must be kidding. Like "The Onion" or some other type of parody. I read a couple more posts and it became apparent he is an escapee.

He means what he says. I just don't get how he could though. It all seems so intent on blaming anybody that doesn't think the same way. There are a few other posts like that too but the internet is full of that stuff. I don't think anybody really pays attention.

Your post reads like you intended. I couldn't take the time to figure him out this much. least there is variety here I see as I look around.

Busy day, koshersalaami I was just over on Mandy Farmers after riffing on pg 16 Cliff Notes Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain, after a rough eve and pro-babble should kick my Afterthought project as the core cancelled what with the hazardous intractable fog earlier also we no doubt can postulate minimal progress (are these people high or what?) what with foreseeable can-kicking and a international earth-shaking PLOT wherein democracy lost. And the winners were shocked.

I await word from Lima. O I did at least see that Martin Guitar. I'm sure. O well. Just wood and cat gut! Bold, near fearless essay, kind sir.

May God bless you and yours,

Naah. Not trying to lure him. Not for his benefit.

James, what Martin guitar? I owned a satin finish D28 for years but had to pawn it at one point. I eventually got more cash and bought an old Gibson Hummingbird. Unexpectedly, I prefer the Hummingbird.

Your title is incomplete, Mr. Salaami. It should end with AND Conservatives Are Stupider Than Liberals, as per some important studies conducted by Satoshi Kanazawa and others:

We already knew liberals were better educated. Go to any university town and compare its politics to the politics around it. Bu I'm not sure that belongs in this post, because this is about immorality, and stupidity is too involuntary to be immoral in and of itself.

I should have answered this in my previous comment but I was a bit distracted. The Tea Party actually hikacked the Republican Party but Al Qaida and ISIS have not hijacked world Islam, it's just that a lot of Americans think so. One of the more peculiar aspects of American reporting on Islam is that we keep asking why Muslims aren't condemning terrorism when the truth is that they are but those condemnations go unreported because they don't fit the narrative. This has to be an insanely frustrating experience.

Sometimes that reaches absurd proportions. The best example of this was the Ground Zero Mosque flap. The imam of that Sufi congregation is one of the most pro-American antiterrorist Muslims you can imagine. This was a guy who the State Department regularly sent to the Middle East to talk to Muslims in our behalf. This is a guy whose father was also a peace negotiator. This is a guy who said in public that American law was already closer to the intention of Sharia than what Al Qaida was following. When a guy like that is accused of building a mosque near Ground Zero as an expression of Muslim conquest, ISIS and Al Qaida aren't hijacking Islam, we're hijacking Islam on their behalf.

As to conservatives, the problem is the guys like that who are left have no home in the Republican Party because there aren't anough of them. Two of the bloggers on this site started out as conservatives: Rob Wittman and Ted Frier. Neither is any more, mainly because the conservatives in power became such whackjobs that liberals started to make more sense. For one thing, they're both egalitarians, and Republican egalitarianism is pretty much dead.

I just watched the clip. God, Aaron Sorkin can write. I've watched his shows since Sports Night.

I'm surprised, Mr. Salaami, that you would conflate how stupid a person is or isn't with what level of formal education they have or have not received. There is little or no direct correlation between the two things, though I take your point about morality on the one hand vs. innate level of intelligence on the other. Still, the studies I mentioned address the ways in which racism and other not very attractive aspects of what are typically seen as conservative world views are basically functions of stupidity, and when viewed in that light I'm not sure there is quite as crisp of a divide between stupidity-based conservatism and some hypothetically choice-based version as you seem to think there is. If someone is a selfish, unempathetic racist because they are stupid, are they therefore not to be held as accountable for their beliefs as someone who "chooses" to view the world and their fellow human beings that way? That seems an odd sort of morality to me, but then I've never had much patience with discussions about how many cryptofascists can dance on the head of a pin and how low their IQ has to be to qualify them for a Go To Heaven Free Card.
