Superman is an insomniac

or at least a guy with an aching back

it was Clark of Kent who could sleep to dream

in his mind in the moonlight he is Atlas or Alcides

or any other ace on any other team

playing and winning with rowdy men who dig in deep

Kent works curves into corners, watches every batter weep

happily married to the mitt, he delivers love and stinging kisses

sent rent over home plate, the only thing angular between him and his missus

he develops a taste for extra innings, each one clear in X-Ray vision

drunk with devotion, an every-priest on a mission

his dream-heart dyed warm oxblood brown leather

seasoned to perfection by wind, by will, by weather

Superman is a hero it’s not that he has all this power but that he has this deep wisdom and knows how to use that power wisely. However it always made me sad that he is essentially a guy who has spent his whole life alone.

it can be lonely there on the mound ~

What can I say? You pretty much captured him there.

Interesting that you chose to use the name Alcides rather than Hercules. I am not inferring that you were being willfully obscure, mind you. Just found it interesting.

Those last two lines are dynamite.

Clever, this, describing Superman in terms of a pitcher.  He may be the man of steel, but I'd bet no one steals on him.  Steve is right about the last two lines: in terms of pace and sound, they dazzle.  I like how "oxblood brown leather" slows the meter, as if gathering strength for the rhythmic cascade of the last line.

clark kent an every priest on a mission? I see him as that sometimes , I admit, since Superman died,

and future Supermen were strangled in the crib by incoherent illogical non-poetic technotalk

and when they finally start to walk, instead of walking being a warm up phase to flying

it becomes the whole raison d'etre of itself for fucksakes!

hola Brass! I was thinking of Alcides Escobar...even though he's a shortstop.
say, do you have any idea what the wind has been trying to say lately?

Jerry, hello ~ it is fun to think about the guys would try to steal on our superhero.
thanks for your always expansive observations ~

that's just it, james, warming up is essential to longevity.

R&L... but of all comic book heroes I liked Aquaman the best, he could communicate with whales how cool is that?  ;-)
