Sunday morning found Fred disguised as a green blob hanging from the top of the cage. This evening, he has firmed up his shape and assumed the gold dots. I have always loved those dots. Next weekend I am going to work on moving him from the corner.

Monkey, I grew up in the country in Indiana, chrysalis and cocoons we're normal and everywhere. We we're always excited to find them and careful to leave them alone. We would also catch caterpillars and they would metamorphose in whatever container we had them in. As for monarchs, this is only my second and the first one didn't end well.

I'm glad all of you are joining in. :) Here is today's photo. Not much change.

I love the gold spots too. One of my favorite illustration assignments was a sequence from egg to caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly. The butterfly took easily three times as long to render the the cocoon, but the cocoon was the best one.

It looks like it won't be difficult to move. Don't they take a bit of time to struggle out, like chicks do from eggs? If you know the typical incubation time, you could keep an extra eye on it then. It's like you're god. :)

I'll settle for overseer. :) Here's today's shot, notice the decay of the leaves.

Comment by Foolish Monkey on July 20, 2017 at 8:56am

is decay a bad thing or does it generate heat and help the baby monarch develop?

update update!!!

That's a good question about the decay generating heat, I think the cage should be ventilated enough for any heat to escape. I took down the one leaf tonight, I'm going to trim the other leaf and dump out the frass tomorrow. It does smell when I open the port on the top. :( And here's today's pic, still no change.*Qc4IvTNgRAIDR-mIcxNZZ8kySh1D*29V8NblQSA-/IMG_20170720_191428.jpg
