I listened with a steadily rising gorge to the hearings yesterday during which one after the next congressional shill for the narrow interests of the Haves pretended not even remotely convincingly to care for the health needs of their Have-Not constituents whose old insurance plans must by law and quite properly now be ditched for not rising even to minimal levels of adequacy.
As I listened I was reminded of this fact: overwhelmingly over the last three generations (and most likely ever since we have had a federal income tax) those states represented by these frauds have received from Washington -- that is from the federal income taxes from people in states whose representatives overwhelmingly support fairness in health care -- extraordinary sums, annually, far, far more than they have ever paid in to federal tax coffers.
This is to say, the states represented by people who have a genuine interest in improving the lot of the least among us have consistently voted to send their own citizens' tax monies to those states who traditionally are peopled by, in the aggregate, the-least-among-us.
This is to say, further, that the states whose representatives have a genuine interest in the least among us have been floating the states with the most of the least-among-us since anyone can recall...and yet those states have tended to be represented by people who don't care about the poor and the otherwise marginal among their own constituents.
In Matthew's earshot, we're told, the ancient rabbi said (26:40):
WHAT YOU DO TO THE LEAST OF US YOU DO TO ME.
And far earlier than that man lived and died, the question was posed:
AM I MY BROTHER'S KEEPER?
The answer's supposed to be YES.
