Bill O'Reilly's comments regarding Maxine Waters truly sum up this new era we've invited ourselves into. After all, we elected a man who denigrates the handicapped, people of color, women, religious groups and, minorities in general. He and his administration have clearly demonstrated that the rules that govern the rest of us - or at least OUGHT to - DO NOT APPLY. Our democracy, our society that some rush to defend as "class-less" is showing its true, privileged colors. Billionaires, have at it. It is yours for the taking. Even when it comes to the Federal Government.
Many others, especially and perhaps specifically, those on the right have gleefully entered the "land grab." They are all for it. After eight, oppressive years of having to "watch" themselves, now they can just let it rip.
And so, someone like Bill O'Reilly, ostensibly a "smart" man, feels no compunction while on national television, to comment on Maxine water's physical appearance. Former Republican congressman Joe Walsh feels free to tweet : "We LOWERED the bar for Obama. He was held to a lower standard cuz he was black." Notice the "cuz." Joe is trying to "be" black while at the same time showing his bigoted ass.
It's not too late. We can right the ship. Certainly, we are called to do so. This, from Lincoln's first inaugural address is highly relevant:
"I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."
He had a way with words that I do not.
