Credentials and credibility...go figure. Spring of '15 seems so damn long ago now. I miss all of you. The dead and the living dead who I spent six years with on OS,under a different alias. I am forgetting them...and everything else too; but what I do remember is the encouragement and kind words that helped me as a writer while I was becoming a historian. I am a historian, whose father was a bell hop in Asbury Park during WWII.
What was then all I knew, after four decades of field work, now half a decade more has forced me to reconfigure me, at too late a date to pull off anything. Yet I persist. I am not who I was when we met in 2009, on OS, or at least those who are still with us.
OS made me a different person... maybe a better one. I am a historian because of credentials and Howard Zinn, but I am the historian that I am because of you, and the now departed OS folk who shared themselves with me.
We...carry on. I do my field work every day and write. I do the job. We are out there, all of us, doing the job, now with credentials and... credibility.
Thank you my fellow former OS troopers! This son of a bell hop carries on.

I can't tell from the description who you are. Did we know each other on OS?

By the way, there are a few others here who had different names on OS.

Welcome, whoever you are.

  • Thanks KS...of of course I remember you. But it was Scanner who gave me my first like on OS.  I watched Scanner become a much better version of himself because of the OS community. Prior to OS I had written decades of stuff that was never read. I never even tried to make it readable. Reading Scanner's and others work...made me want to do better and be more. I am grateful.

I probably arrived later than you did, in early 2010. Scanner was one of my earliest contacts also.i don't know if he ever posted anything I didn't read.

I was late to the party on Open Salon, so there are a bunch of OS folks with whom I am not familiar.  I never intended to become a historian, but in my last decade of living, for better or worse, I find myself mostly looking back at how all this came to be.

All of us old timers look back now!  Yesterday seems like today in our eyes.  I was Buffy, now I am still me, just different (older and wiser).

Thanks....KS, JMac, Sheila. Scanner built an empire on OS....true that, I do not know if he outlived OS or OS outlived him, but he was dedicated to it in a big way.  Getting thousands of reads on a regular basis from a dead stop....his was some story. As far as history goes...I try to make as much of it as I can afford, and write what I can remember...which is less and less.
