What do Be My Baby (Ronettes), Mr. Tamborine Man (Byrds), Strangers in the Night (Sinatra), Good Vibrations (Beach Boys), the Pet Sounds album (also Beach Boys), Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel), Bridge Over Troubled Waters (Simon & Garfunkel), The Way We Were (Streisand), Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In (Fifth Dimension), the theme for Three’s Company, Close to You (Carpenters), and the theme for The Brady Bunch have in common?

That, by the way, is an insanely abbreviated list, the full list stretches from Elvis Presley to Sam Cooke to Steely Dan.

All those sessions used the same drummer, who died today. His name is Hal Blaine. He was ninety years old. He was, among other things, part of the group of sessions players called the Wrecking Crew.

If you follow music news, the next few days will probably feature talk about Blaine a lot. There’s of course a ton about him and by him on YouTube.

The drum introduction and interlude on this Ronettes classic changed the way kids danced at the hop...

Often times the "back up band" was/is the difference between success and failure in the music industry...

The prime example of this is the Motown Sound....It was the house or studio band assembled to become the backbone of the Motown recording label....

This guy left his mark and a legacy....He's virtually everywhere in pop music....

Ending up an underemployed scientist after failing to achieve medschool admission, among my greatest regrets is that in fifth or sixth grade in central florida around the time  the beatles began eclipsing elvis pelvis i did not at least take advantage of our elementary school sponsored music or band program.  My mother Xd out that childhood notion, she had her goal for me and that was for me to be a medical doctor, not a musician and most definitely not a drummer which is what at that time nineteen sixty two or so i wanted to start learning.  That was it, i became a musical moron, instrumentally handicapped and retarded.  Worst of all though is being a zero when it comes to helping my grandkids appreciate and develop their musical talents.
