Andrew Gillum wins Democratic nomination for governor of Florida.

His Republican opponent, Ron Desantis, responds in typical racist dog whistle fashion:

Let's disambiguate the Desantis statement in the video:

"Andrew Gillum is an articulate monkey who performed better than his Democratic primary oppents."

White people may be fully appreciative of the offensiveness of the word "monkey" as it is used here.

However, Black people are keenly aware of the dog whistles that are burried in words like "articulate" and "perform".

If you don't get it, don't worry, you don't have to understand.

Not knowing, or not appreciating, or even not caring, what is racist and inherently offensive to Black folks is one of the perks of white privilege...

Yeah, I get this.

Back on Open, I was having a conversation with a guy I thought had just said something racist (I don’t remember which instance this was, probably the one where this guy said Bill Beck voted for Obama because Bill was Black, and when I pointed out what the Hell he was saying so he’d have the opportunity to back off, he doubled down), he made a remark that included the term “tar baby.” I hit the ceiling over his use of a B’rer Rabbit reference in the middle of a discussion about his being insensitive about racism. I got denials all over the place. I saw a lot of people do this kind of thing. Once I really started watching for it, which I did because Bill told me he encountered it all the time, I kept tripping over it.

The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state”...

~ Ron DeSantis, GOP Candidate for Florida governor on 8/29/18

WOW...  This is the racist dog whistle from hell that Andrew Gillum's opponent just spewed...  He apparently hasn't had the chance to read my last post (i.e. exact WHO the majority of Florida voters are [Millennials and Gen X-ers] and that most of them are minorities who LIKE socialist agendas!)

"Once I really started watching for it, which I did because Bill told me he encountered it all the time, I kept tripping over it."

The next step is to call people on it whenever and wherever it occurs...

All too often whites will engage in racist banter when they think they're in a 'safe' environment or amongst like-minded white people...

You will continue to 'trip over it' until you do whatever is necessary to put a stop to it...

White people must confront white people on matters such as this. Otherwise, it continues...

Millienials getting involved as Socialist/Progressive/Liberal Democrats will change the Party from within over time...

They'll sort things out and make the changes as they and their meassage reach maturity....

Good for all of them who have decided not to 'wait their turn'....

And, of course, there’s another part of DeSantis’ statement that’s wrong, and that’s the “bankrupting the state” part. I find it weird that very few people talk about this.

What do people think that poorer people do with the disposable income they get from government programs?

They spend it. In this case, they spend it with Florida businesses.

And what’s the result of that?

  • More business
  • More taxable business profits
  • More business purchases from other businesses (leading to more taxable business profits in those businesses)
  • More jobs, which means both more taxpayers and more business customers, whose demand creates
  • More business, more taxable business profits, more business purchases from other businesses, and more jobs, which means
  • MORE TAX REVENUES
  • and more jobs means fewer people using social services, saving the state money

Has anyone noticed that the economically healthier states, the ones that pay more in federal taxes than other states, tend to be blue states?

This is a tangent, but it just points out that DeSantis is not only wrong about the racism, he’s wrong about the economic concept he’s applying the racist concept to.

Ron, I assure you that I called people on it. I did in general but at one point I got fed up enough to write a post about it, not naming names because that wasn’t the point but calling the population of the site out on tolerating this crap. That thread remains the most extensive fight I ever saw on Open Salon.

On Open, I generally found that the ideal number of comments on a successful thread was about 75-80. Past that generally indicated fights. This comment count I think crossed five hundred.

Yes, Steel Breeze. Those were the initial writers in the contentious post.

Jan Sand dug in and refused to see the offensiveness.

However, there were many others often revered for their artistic talents and lovable humorous posts and comments who waded in hip deep to backslap each other as well.

Bullshit doesn't have boundaries.

Kosh,  Confronting the issue as a blogger with a screen name on a site where you have a rather popular profile is one thing....

Doing so in your neighborhood, synagogue, bank, place of employment, cocktail and dinner parties, etc is quite another...

That takes conviction and courage....

Eyeball to eyeball arguments and possible ostracism are daunting prospects to be sure... However, unless this is done by white people in places and groups where black people are absent, your 'tripping' will become regular and recurring pratfalls....
