i want to share this poem by one of my favorite poets, ELLEN BASS.

Bad things are going to happen.
Your tomatoes will grow a fungus
and your cat will get run over.
Someone will leave the bag with the ice cream
melting in the car and throw
your blue cashmere sweater in the dryer.
Your husband will sleep
with a girl your daughter’s age, her breasts spilling
out of her blouse. Or your wife
will remember she’s a lesbian
and leave you for the woman next door. The other cat—
the one you never really liked—will contract a disease
that requires you to pry open its feverish mouth
every four hours. Your parents will die.
No matter how many vitamins you take,
how much Pilates, you’ll lose your keys,
your hair, and your memory. If your daughter
doesn’t plug her heart
into every live socket she passes,
you’ll come home to find your son has emptied
the refrigerator, dragged it to the curb,
and called the used appliance store for a pick up—drug money.
The Buddha tells a story of a woman chased by a tiger.
When she comes to a cliff, she sees a sturdy vine
and climbs half way down. But there’s also a tiger below.
And two mice—one white, one black—scurry out
and begin to gnaw at the vine. At this point
she notices a wild strawberry growing from a crevice.
She looks up, down, at the mice.
Then she eats the strawberry.
So here’s the view, the breeze, the pulse
in your throat. Your wallet will be stolen, you’ll get fat,
slip on the bathroom tiles in a foreign hotel
and crack your hip. You’ll be lonely.
Oh, taste how sweet and tart
the red juice is, how the tiny seeds
crunch between your teeth.

Hi Angry Buddha Guy - glad to see you back.

*Excellent* poem and good reminder. Currently focused on the deliciousness of berries in the midst of a depressing 'everything,' myself  : )

Thanks for this. Ellen Bass. Hmmm...

That's really good

Welcome back

thanks for the hiddyhooooooo folks ...

good to be back in the saddle so to speak.

i've been very busy with my new space. just too damn much to take in all at once. 49 windows this house has with more than 700 panes of glass! it is great! so full of light and life! i don't remember ever being so alert and receptive to that which surrounds me.

so nice to see you too amy ... i'm touched by your warm welcome and sentiment ... sorry i had to leave without so much as a short adios, but when the need calls, you know?

who was/is abg 1.0? oh silly girl, sometimes you just crack me up.

1.0 was the previous version ... this 2.0 is the new improved program.

does this mean that i am perhaps kinder and gentler? hhhmmmmmmmm, could be.

does this mean i am a more forgiving and respectful soul? one will just have to wait and see on that one.

i am better for what i need to be ... but it might be best to not test the waters until you know for certain it's water ...  ya know, safety first! and it has been 13 days since the last accident in my hood. catcha ya on the flip side, ya'll!

wow, girlfriend's run off with my car

if this were night school Poetry 105, I'd blirt: catalytic !

and did it really happen-all this finger snappin'?

Comment by ABG 2.0 on August 23, 2017 at 11:27am

ahhhhhhhhh yes, the finger snappin' ... has it interfered with your communique with your doo?

nope, definitely not night school Poetry 105 or even 310

but then you are excused, s your girl ran off with your car! too bad soo sad ...

the beat generation/dharma bums/hipsters/beatniks were an integral element of american literature giving place for kerouac, ginsburg, cassedy nd yes, even maynard g krebs, a venue to ply the wordsmithing

and yes finger snappin' and bongos were there also ... as well flutes and the foundations of spoken word, the format and forerunner of hip hop and rap ...

it was the birthplace of american coffee houses

walking only sucks when you have no other choice
