So, here's the question:

Have we become too esoteric as an open-ended social media platform?

I think it's due to some of the nut jobs chasing people away.  Either that, or the competition.  I came out of the old Open Salon days, the golden age.  I fear we'll never see them again.

I know why too many people left and, trust me, it never has anything to do with Esoteric. On the contrary - content is what kept people here as long as they stayed. Some people get busy elsewhere (like JMac) but a lot leave upset.

I suppose it’s possible that some left because their friends died. If Trig and James were still here I suspect the site would be more active.

iM losing both words and people faster than I’m getting them. People who read and write are fewer and fewer. Short bits....people might glance and reply...but a paragraph needs to be read. 1/3 of a groups effort has to be recruitment in order to survive...let alone grow. Salon was going broke all the time, wasn’t it? I see they still put stuff out but I hardly look at it.

People do not want to come to a site where personal beliefs are constantly being maligned with venomous spates of name calling.

People do not want to come to a site where they are constantly being lumped together with misdeeds perpetrated by others of the same religion and/or skin color.

I bet I could ask any number of people if they would be interested in reading at a site where that has become the modus operandi and they would say they haven't any interest.

Doesn't seem esoteric to me.

People have emigrated for a variety of reasons. The most common, I have been told, is that this place is too small and cliquey, a doen or so talking ceaselessly to one another repetitiously.

Hardly esoteric.

Maybe I'm dense but I can't name a clique

I dropped out because of the severe attrition of so many good contributors from Open.  From time to time I'd have a look-in but wasn't keen by the content.  The last time, several months ago, most of the discussion was on a ridiculous post about how Jews owned most of the world's banks, including nation banks.  There's enough crap around that I hardly need to seek out more.  But maybe I'll give this place another try.

We're just Open leftovers, keeping a tiny flame alive. Many thanks again to lorianne for making it happen, but, without Big Salon's traffic spilling over it is just a couple of us who like to keep the knives sharp, because we know we will need to use them, in 6 days, and, possibly in 2020. Lets not forget we had 8 years of growth and safety as well as being lifted out of a DEPRESSION caused by haters, Libertarian Idiots, and One Percenter lap dogs by our former Black Hawaiian Fearless Leader, who, just in time, is back on the stump. Lets hope it pulls even a fraction of people to actually think, and the country escapes its worst times since Andrew Johnson, Woodrow Wilson, and Richard Nixon. Reagan sucked too, but not as much, even though he was a total asshole.

It's a numbers game. For Our to be more successful, we need a critical mass of contributors (whether we agree with their viewpoints or not). It's probably what I miss most about Open -- the incredible diversification.

And you're damned right we need to thank Lorianne. I don't know how she does it.
