Hello.

It's after midnight, Eastern Daylight Time, on October 1.

A lot of you might know that I attempted to organize a move here now from OS. It was driven by the fact that OS wasn't working and was frustrating the living crap out of a lot of its users. (A lot of you might not know that it was I who was responsible for this latest effort.)

OS is working now, aside from the fact that I hear its main page is clogged with spam at the moment. For that reason, I'm not expecting the exodus I would if OS weren't working. OS will inevitably screw up again - it always does - but this time a whole lot of people know what to do in the event that it does. At that point, I think a mass move would be likely.

I've decided to come over here, at least for a few days, to try it out and because I'm grateful to Lorianne for being willing to host the hordes I was attempting to drive to her doorstep. I won't post on OS for at least the next few days, just here, for what it's worth, and assuming I think of anything worth posting.

Forgive me if I don't know the ropes here yet. I may be a little klutzy at first.

I guess it remains to be seen if the population here will increase today, or if the activity level increases today from people who have recently opened accounts here.

In any case, for those who make the move today, welcome. If I'm qualified to say that.

HS,

If that phenomenon were more common, a lot more of OS would be here. The move as it is still isn't finished. Scanner's likely to be next.

I'm still backing up my posts from OS, though I'm storing them on my computer, not here. Maybe I'll cross-post some of the old ones. I'm not backing up the discussions, and in some cases it's the discussions that were most interesting.

It just occurred to me that by moving a chunk of members off OS we are actually going to improve the operating efficiency of OS salon by reducing the overhead and, if we go back, the service will degrade upon our return.  Does that make sense?

That hadn't already occurred to you? I figured that if we moved en masse, OS would by definition become less clogged and work easier. However, not enough of us moved this time for it to make a difference, at least that I'm aware of.  Trig, Asia, Amy were already here and may very well still be active on OS in addition to here. Traveller moved; I don't know if he's commenting on OS. Lezlie and I aren't for the week, but that only makes three of us that I'm sure of. Scanner is on his way here when he feels better, but he's not active at the moment on OS anyway because of how he's feeling.

If they screw up again, we will move in much greater numbers. That will of course affect OS efficiency but that could damage that community enough that it wouldn't be worth it.

Still, there are technical issues here that have to be resolved before this place becomes attractive long-term to a lot of OSers. Some of it is minor league like the page changing on comments and how that makes answers to a whole lot of comments in one comment difficult. The biggest downside, however, is unquestionably the lack of a Favorites feature. I don't know when my friends post unless I happen to find them on the main page. That works while this site isn't terribly active but with a big enough influx that would become a complete pain in the ass.

1. I don't know about squares. I don't know what square you are referring to. I never know.

2. This is old. In later October of 2012 Open Salon screwed up worse, Lorianne added a Favotites feature, and a bunch of us moved here for what turned into a couple of months.

And no, I didn't try to run a salon. I tried to keep the OS community intact because if they got frustrated enough with the technical problems OS had at the time, I didn't want the community to scatter. I wanted them to stay together in one place.

I know they do, Arthur. But when OS had trouble, I didn't want them to run in different directions for no good reason when they liked each other. So some of us said: "This place is getting unusable and we want to leave it, but we don't want to leave you, so come with us. If you bring your friends, you won't miss them at the new place."

Enmity happens
In my case, not much. I can talk to almost anyone. Almost.
