A Big Upset in New York; A Democratic Socialist Beats a Democrat

A 28 y/o millennial, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, beat a veteran incumbent Democrat in a New York State primary election.

Is this the first fruit of the tree that Bernie Sanders planted?  Does this mean the beginning of a new day for Progressives or the kiss of death?  Ocasio-Cortez is not a Democrat.  Instead, like Bernie, she is a Democratic Socialist.  While not a win for Democrats it is a win for liberals.

And, too, it is a win for a growing minority that scares conservatives.  At its heart is this the threat that Trump and his allies are trying to wall off, deport, and in any way possible halt?

As some have asked, if Hispanic immigrants are all rapists and murderers, and if they are threatening your job, just what is your job?

Plenty of kudos ought to be going to the Parkland kids, I'd imagine. They've been out non-stop since the slaughter of their classmates on Valentine's Day, all over the country this summer, getting youth out to 'Vote Them Out.'

I went to look into Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. This was a Democrat primary, so yes, she IS a Democrat, the progressive end of the Democrat spectrum, and yes, a self-described Democratic Socialist. BUT, a Democrat.....right? Am I reading these articles correctly? (not much time today to read articles slowly this morning)  It's the corporate Dems who'd prefer her and other true progressives in the party to not be thought of as Democrat, but, she is. And more power to her, personally. Less corporate Dems who act just like money-loving and money-first Repubs, fine by me.

Her opponent's campaign outfunded her 10 to 1 - and she crushed it in the votes by 16 points. Grassroots has power!!!

I hope Amy is watching and listening....

This is the way to go. Usurp and depose the Old Garde Democratic Party.

It's their time. it has to be if we have any hope of exorcising the demons from the body politic...

Note to Hillaey et al: Sit down, and shut the fuck up. No endorsement, no statements of redirected support are necessary or required....

Just go out and vote for the future of the country and the soul of America....

Nancy Pelosi, to her credit, praised Crowley and said nothing about Ocasio-Cortez except that she was young, she was a woman and she was a progressive, and we need more progressive women.  She joked that she was a woman and progressive and 2/3 wasn't bad.

I think that for the Old Garde to come out in support would not only be unnecessary, but unhelpful in that it might taint the newcomer's image with entrenched and stodgy.

I need to talk to my twenty-something granddaughter who was an avid Bernie supporter about this.

To the Democrat/Democratic Socialist question; Bernie, who declared as an independent in order to beat a Democrat challenger as I recall, when asked whether he was a Democrat said he was a Social Democrat.  In Europe they are separate from Democratic Socialists.  I read about the two at the time, but am a little fuzzy except that Democratic Socialists are more...socialist.  The terms in this country are mainly confusing.  Since the right thinks all Democrats are socialists/communists we really have nothing to lose by actually using the term.

"Since the right thinks all Democrats are socialists/communists we really have nothing to lose by actually using the term."

We must beat them with a winning narrative, not just winning debates.

Yes, she sure is...  that is why I want to make it abundantly clear to y'all that Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is a Democratic Socialist FIRST (proven by her being a card carrying member of Democratic Socialists of America) and a Democratic party candidate second.   Her political platform is so far to the left that calling her a "progressive" in the same breath as all of the other wannabe "progressives" in the Democratic Party is laughable.

She is NOT joining the Democratic party to "orchestrate change from the inside", like many of you desire, she is going inside because it is easier to torch the party from there.  Once the flame is lit you'll see her walk across "The REAL Left" street to the chant of "burn that motherfucker DOWN!"

P.S.  Democratic Socialists are WAY to the left of Social Democrats.  Think of Democratic Socialists as the Green Party on steroids and Social Democrats being Democratic Party Lite.  (most of them would have been centralist Democrats 20 years ago).

BTW, Nancy Pelosi can kiss my tan ass.  She IS the problem!

That "feckless cunt"  (a term I abhor, but is too apt in her case) even had the audacity to criticizes Maxine Waters “unacceptable” comments about Trump.  I and I'm betting a HUUUUUGE share of Ms. Ocasio-Cortez supporters would consider Pelosi's endorsement to be a tremendously negative thing.  It is way better if that stealth Republican joined Hillary in sitting down, and shutting the fuck up.

Same goes for that punk ass, Nancy Pelosi wannabe Cory Booker who did the same thing.

Amy, Usurp and depose the Old Garde Democratic Party by whatever or any means necessary...Including torching from within if that's what it takes...

I did say "Hillary et al",, meaning the so-called Democratic Party establishment whoever that is and however that may be defined....

When money loses in an election this badly, that’s a good thing.
