1 Sentence The Embassy Move...This Zionist's Concern

The administration's planned embassy move, Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and prior to any impending overall settlement, amounts to gratuitous pandering to the U.S. and Israeli far-right, born of bigotry and not of anything like sound, robust strategy.

Thanks to Lori for sorting these site issues.

Great day to all.

That's something I hadn't considered in commenting on Ron's post about this. I've been looking at why not do it, but the question of why do it should also be addressed. In the long run it makes sense because having the embassy in another city is idiotic and because we're presumably talking about West Jerusalem, where the Knesset and PM's residence are, we're talking inside 1967 borders. However, aside from convenience and not treating Israel as less legitimate than any other country where we have an embassy, I'm not sure there's a reason to do it now. At the beginning of Trump's term it would have been easy. Now the optics are considerably lousier, plus Trump's initially strong support among the Sunni States isn't quite what it was, evidenced by Egypt recently giving landing rights to Russian military aircraft.

Kosh   no US pres before now has regarded such a move as anything but something to consider as a comprehensive deal ie effected. There is no reason to do this preemptively aside from his pandering to the worst Jewish and Evangelical elements.

Oh God, Ron's right. That's why he'd do it.

Ron may or may not have this right...there is never singular motivation even if there is a prime one.

Strikes me that like the rest of the Trump agenda this move is short-sighted, to put it mildly; it is a three-minute "solution" to a 3,000 year-old problem. If the Romans couldn't resolve this dispute, there's no chance Trump/Kushner will do so. Frankly, I doubt God herself could untie this Gordian Knot.

If poetic justice counts for anything (it doesn't),  the Jews should have been given Germany as their home country after World War II. But, alas, that would have satisfied neither the Germans nor the Jews.

A student of mine, Simone Zelitch, has just had her newest novel reviewed in the Times...Germany is given over to the Jews as you describe.
