1-Sentence: RIGHTS, EXCEPTIONALISM, ABSURDITY

"EVANGELICALS OPEN DOOR TO DEBATE ON GAY RIGHTS"

                                                                                                          NYT 6.9.15 (A-1)

Aside from the foolishnessness of imagining Rights as "Gay", "Black", "Jewish", "Women's", "Native American" (Civil Rights are diminished the moment we minimize them with adjectives) the noxious notion that any religious group gets to weigh in meaningfully on the constitutional standing of citizens in a secular democracy, sullies our exceptionalism, is, at best, absurd.

I agree about the noxious notion but disagree some about the adjectives, because some causes take concentration. Without that concentration, without acknowledging who the targeted groups are, I'm not sure we'd get anywhere. But that concept is worth a discussion.

Yes...worth a good discussion...  :)

I suspect the adjectives are a kind of code to indicate groups that have been (or are currently) denied civil rights.  The headline, for me, prompts these questions: what does "open [the] door" mean? and whose door is being opened?   If it means a genuine attempt among evangelicals to set aside or go beyond reflexive religious response and discuss the issue in a manner that seeks its human truth rather than bending it to fit a "holy" text, then I would find it hard to criticize.

It'd be useful were it to mean something more genuine than their being forced to accept a sociological reality and flailing for ways to control the new legal realities. As you can see, I'm skeptical.  :)

But what about Equine Rights of the mounted police of McKinney, TX... the #1 Place to Live in America!!  Surely we can protect innocent animals from being endangered by law enforcement when there are plenty of Army surplus armored vehicles available for protest surveillance and crowd control.  But hey that fits into the Obama conspiracies folder.

Sorry, Jon I'm still waking up and feeling sardonic, ironic and generally twisted and grumpy.  ;-(
