Rain Check
~~     (:RATE:)  4~~~~~
keen and bright as zirconi:
his diamond train ride
snored Mr. Mahoney
a crepuscular summer moth
the numbered shirt cloth
of horsehide
he dreamt
the raucous ride
the boys of summer
possessed his snooze
timeless bricks and mortar
green ivied walls of bit cigars
on warm play ball! lights
spiced mustard
sticky yelling kids
cool custard
he starts
espies big domes
like jars
of Mars
donneybrooke awake
one year
none of the change
at once clear
his stop long passed
while jostled abrupt at last
he thought it all baloney
slept more
our Monsieur Mahoney
caught off base
twixt second and first
without foamed beer
no quench of thirst
he raised some dust
the slide itself
conclude it must
how years like bases
now swiped dem places
from fans like me
as hot dogs bark $4.50
never to be free
zero zero
no longer thrifty
though tasty and rovey
like flapjack anchovy
in the bleachers
he found creatures
beneath parkas
against the lightning bright
creaked and groan
here comes the dome
of zoom and chaw
in the bullpen
he saw
warmed spitballs
whoosh waft wisp
hot popcorn
buttered to knaw
continued fray
no rain delay
the game
the sky well

(to be continued---an outtake from my collection: Pulverised Monarch Wings Unseen in Time Capsules)

Fun to read aloud. Caught the base-a-ball-a flavor, the sights and sounds and smells.

@Daniel E. Walsh, thanks, dude:

November until March
dreams 'bout
kept him
April 'til 'tober
all big words
how keep
him sober

from spring to fall
the happiest:

dos lines so white
knotholers to rescue
honed grass 'o
o' green fescue
the best of all:

of aces
hey batter batter batter
full bases
yell hey chatter chatter chatter
tight dem laces

of whom be damned
I've a man on, two men on ---
grand slammed

and here's the twist
it's in the wrist:
there's a line drive back toward
the left field wall up up
it's gone

the crowd what
when said but
a moment,
(sip orange

say again
so it
echo and call:

"a lament for the Lamb in America with instances of remarkable lamb-like youths"

Comment by Maui Surfer on March 4, 2019 at 5:05pm
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night, yet stuck on the web, not yet widespread, but coming ...

Maui Surfer~(geez i tapped your surname three times with this cold, cold heart: 1st.)Maui Surger 2.) Maui Synergy 3). then Maui Sweet Hawaiian King Rock & by the time another 500 miles had gone by~I finally got to see the Great (Attorney General of the Beat Generation) AG Allen Ginsberg read at a quickly sold out UWMilwaukee auditorium and after so much caught breath anticipation and almost woebegone great expectations, dear Allen Ginsburg sorta told us all off working shakin' a tambourine and chantin' if I get this write right bloody well right OM Shanti he chanted. I thought I saw the ghost of Gregory Corso. Very late the next early a.m. Lithe One and me SAW HIM AlONE in the wind on the corner across the street from our studio upstairs from the Sweet Doomed Angel. Alone in the dark with a cigarette observing the night moves. He looked just like his photographs. Shorter than Hendrix. More empathetic than St. Augustine. Darker, maybe, like St.Paul's champagne flute.

catch-22!~The way things are going? Slacks are optional~!O! good morning heartache...here we go again My sincere hope is that St. Peter consults William Butler Yeats and gives us all a break~ we'll all be there!

"The Be-In was a spiritual occasion, culminating from the countless preceding events, dances, thoughts, breaths, lovemakings, illuminations. The Be-In was a blossom, it was a flower. It was out in the weather. It didn't have all its petals. There were worms in the rose. It was perfect in its imperfections. It was what it was and there had never been anything like it before."

Ginsberg colleague McClure
