Because he was dissatisfied with his TV show salary? WTF!
I'm responding not as a journalist or as a lawyer but as a black man who has suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune so that young men like Smollett would have the opportunity and the option of a career such as his...
This was a stupid publicity stunt paid for by check gone wrong...
My reaction is not as much a rush to judgement as it is an expression of complete disappointment, outrage, and personal hurt...
If you look at, and listen to the black chief of police of Chicago, you'll see and hear the same thing...Listen to black people re this matter express their anger at this scenario beyond shock and dismay and you'll hear what I'm expressing here...
They caught a white supremacist/nationalist, who is apparently bent on committing murderous acts of domestic terrorism...
The evidence against him is clear, convincing and overwhelming...But we won't "rush to judgement", because, at the end of the day he hadn't "done" anything and his behavior surely will not effect or impact the status, standing, or profile of any white person anywhere....
Everyone gets the benefit of the doubt, everyone is innocent until proven guilty...
But not everyone carries the weight and burden of an oppressed community through their careers or their criminal proceedings...
The visceral response/reaction of black people to this travesty is one of immediate and heartfelt shame and disgust...
It is in that regard and context that I repeat, Smollett is a fucking idiot and will remain so unless and until he can establish otherwise to the satisfaction of all who are adversely effected by his conduct and behavior.
There seems to be enough evidence against the guy at this point.... but in this world of convicting a la media, it is important to allow due process, I believe. That said, there is plenty of *evidence.* The Chicago policeman speaking yesterday said it all, frankly, not even what he said as much as his tone. Heartbreaking and contained understandable rage.
Hardly so important in the face of the nation other than any ramifications against the show and therefore innocent actors and crew who might lose salaries, etc, depending... but as a fan of the show Empire, it's a total bummer, too.
The producers of the program have "rushed to judgement" and removed his character from the last two episodes of the season...
He loses about $130,000.00 in salary...
That's 9 or10 times more than minimum wage income for a year...
He wouldn't be expected to give that much away to anyone for any reason...
Instead, he's thrown it away because he wanted more....
Actually Ron, I considered the sources here and have weighed them individually.
You are easier to read and understand. Amy is the same spittle on her shirt whack job she always is.
Both of you are of the same boorish cut of cloth and do not contribute to meaningful change.
"Both of you are of the same boorish cut of cloth and do not contribute to meaningful change."
If this is an invitation to exchange barbs, I respectfully decline...
If this is the best you can do, I understand and offer you my condolences...
If you choose to articulate another ad hominem jibe where none is provoked or warranted, I suggest you do so elsewhere.
Your comment is uncalled for, inappropriate, and unnecessary.
BTW Please list your contributions to meaningful change....
I've spent a lifetime contributing to, preserving, defending, and being meaningful change in ways you couldn't possibly imagine or fathom simply by my presence.....
So bring it ...Show us what you're working with...If you're working with anything beyond your mouth...
Tell us how, when, and where you put your ass on the line in an effort to contribute to meaningful change...
First, let's remember that none of us had any say in how we got here. A couple of folks got together for a boink session and here we are. I had no say in my race or sex or who my parents were etc.. Having stated that, as a white guy, it still pisses me off when a white person does something as stupid or more stupid than Smollett did. Everyone would like to see a general improvement in their condition and stupid stunts like this just kick us all in the nuts.
Mike, if you mean the white guy with a domestic terrorist 'hit list' and an arsenal to match...
...it's not quite the same degree of stupidity, but I get the idea and the message...
Thanks for taking the time to read and comment..
No problem Ron. As for the domestic terrorist, Bubba love him long time. As an aside, before ending up on the wrong side of the law, I used to be one of the largest gun dealers in Virginia. That guy's "arsenal" is your average gun owners collection. Consider that there are an estimated 400 million guns in the U.S. along with 12 TRILLION rounds of ammunition distributed among 70 million gun owners and further consider that 5 million NRA members are getting ads that say "Target Practice" while showing pictures of top democratic leadership and I'm afraid we will soon be in some extremely deep shit.
The amount of damage Tawana Brawley did was enormous. For one thing, she damn near nullified Rev. Sharpton’s career, making him look like an opportunistic sleaze when he’s actually a good guy who has both judgment and a conscience.
The Black community has trouble affording crap like this. Too many bigots seize it to make generalizations. If Smollett did this, he selfishly damaged way more than himself. And this is really difficult damage to undo.
