Now and forever
a bloodline branch of among the oldest, most powerful Western world-wide empires will be, in part, African. That's worth quite a bit, a royal family opting to disassemble in a day some ages-old rigid and toxic stratification.

(And, please:  it's hardly as if the $42M some on the congenitally-dour far Left whine about were thieved from their own pet projects.)

Excellent week ahead!

Chances are the 42 million is a "bare bones" budget for the wedding of this socially conscious couple.

The affair may well have cost 3 times as much....(The whacky protocol is that it could not have cost more than the wedding of the heir apparent.)

Some of the money went to that gospel  choir....

Just getting them there and providing appropriate accommodations would have been enough to crush the, wedding budget of the average black family in the US...

In addition some of the estimated cost includes the "estimated value" of certain amenities which were available to the couple "on the house/free of charge".....

In the US the tradition is the cost of the wedding is borne by the father of the bride....

Given that the Queen wouldn't think of having her grandson marry on a commoners resources and that Meghan is, indeed, African American, think of the 42 million as an installment on reparations....

Sometimes, it's good to be the Queen and in possession of more money than you can count....

Whether or not a reparations installment, this is significant.

...and there's little doubt that the royal family do not regard this as a reparation.

In the US, sure. However, I really, really doubt Diana’s parents picked up the tab on her wedding to Charles. I can picture it. “The Coldstream Guards are HOW much?? Could we use fewer of them? And how much are the musicians? Are you fucking kidding me?”

I think it is well and good if the African Diaspora, and some white people, regard this as reparative. I agree w you, however. it's next-to-impossible to imagine that the royal family does....unless and until there is evidence that it does.

If reparations were to be paid, and I doubt that day will ever come, no one will be permitted to speak of the "transaction"as reparations....

The euphemisms and platitudes will flow like the waters of a mighty stream.....

BTW the "reparations" comment was made with tongue planted firmly in cheek. ...Even if it was a bit "cheeky" for me to bring it up at this moment...

Curious why you'd say this, Monkey:

"but I think she’s the last of it.  Actually I hope.  I would hate to see the crown further modernized and bastardized and turned into a living reality show, which is the direction it appears to be going in."

I think and feel the opposite is happening with this younger generation of British royals, only helped by the addition of Ms. Markle and her experiences with charities and empowerment.

Heads Together, a rather ground breaking organization to help deal with pervasive mental health issues, was formed a couple years ago by William, Harry and Kate - along with their public acknowledgment of their having had mental health issues themselves. Unheard of before. They've started a crucial conversation in the public eye that already has had positive results to change mental health stigmas. Then there's the Invictus Games founded by Harry, a global sort of Olympics for wounded veterans to compete that has been wildly successful in the few years since he started it with successful games and so many veterans being helped and healed and feeling part of life again.

Just two examples listed of positive royal agenda that isn't happening elsewhere with near as much public influence.

And Charles, for all his faults, has been a huge force for organic foods, having understood decades earlier than many how crucial for human and wildlife health growing food crops without poisons is for all, not to mention supporting the organic industry stuffed with smaller farmers vs big agra helps avoid the influence and greed of chemical corporations like Monsanto once they get inroads into sprayed-to-hell food crops and land with now known cancer-causing, bee-and-colony-killing products.... that they can and have seized food growers' lands over as well as ruined plenty of lives.

To me, the reality show of the royals hit peak crazy with Diana - and especially Fergie - and their era of too much nonsense in the public eye. They've learned from that era, imho, and Diana's sons are determined to have Diana's legacy not only be the side of her that reached out and showed care for the regular Joes and Janes and landmines and other things she did, on and on, but they seem to be determined Diana's legacy will be them. And they are stepping up big time. I'm quite proud of the younger royals and how much they've taken on to lead change in the world.

And, personally, the historical drama of a royal wedding is just plain fun. Especially when it is a love affair, especially this love affair. A  welcome uplifting drama with beautiful sights of beautiful humans having a good time this weekend while also preparing to drag an old institution further into relevance and the current world with positive agendas that help humanity. People with perceptions of power, and plenty of public-eye power, doing something good. Right. On. And much needed.

...not to mention this wedding certainly distracted and uplifted us for just one minute from the coalescing of global authoritarian agendas currently going on that definitely do not have helping humanity in any way, shape or form in their plans.
