Conversation with my daughter yesterday

My daughter, seventeen, is as usual telling me I don’t understand her generation, mainly because I’m old, and of course I’ve never been young.

“When I was your age, we all had three noses. Do you have any idea what it’s like to have to live with three...”

”Dad, my generation eats Tide Pods.”

Checkmate.

Today she related that story to my wife, who told her that for our generation it was too inconvenient to measure the detergent.

how in hell do kids eat those things?  the idea is so disgusting!  is it because they die?  it must be that because otherwise they're just eating something utterly revolting!

there are so many fabulous things to eat, like donuts!  THERE ARE ENDLESS CRULLERS AND DONUTS TO EAT!!  why are they eating soap?  the children are insane.

My daughter says that they’re actually restricting access to Tide Pods in supermarkets, like some cold medicines.

Amy, you are the undisputed Meme Queen.

I am becoming increasingly more convinced that the millenia and gen,X types are so self absorbed that they are unable to grasp the idea or the notion that there is something greater than the self and that we don't function well as human beings if there is no acknowledgement of, and commitment to, that which makes us human.

We'd be living under Nazi and Communist rule if these people had to fight WWII...

Nice glass "Damn them millenia and gen,X types" house you got there, Ron!  I bet the view is great, huh?

More young people voted for Clinton, but that bloc did not include as many voters as those over 40, who as a majority voted for Trump.

They are shaped by their experiences, and by what they haven’t experienced. Sometimes it’s hard to remember just how different their experiences are. They have no memory of universal economic hope in America. They have no memory of America having a credible military adversary. They have no memory of a large and powerful part of the world trying to export a revolution that eliminated freedom of speech and freedom of the press and could get you arrested without a real trial for disagreeing with the government. They just think we’re big and oppressive or that we’re great for some unexplained reason involving weird allusions to freedom. They have no memory of the country being united around cultural events. They have no memory of partisan politics being civil and cooperative.

They don’t get that, as Doc Vega has pointed out, Cuba used to execute dissidents. They don’t get that the US is still different from large parts of the world in ways that are desirable and moral.

They don’t get that not all cultures are morally equal because they’ve never been physically threatened by cultures that aren’t.

We don’t know how they’d react if they saw real threats.

Kosh is right: I'm with Millennials surfing in the water and on the beach all the time. For my age I spend an inordinate amount of time with them. They have a number of beefs, but the two majors are ... hope: they don't have any. I bought my house for 125k, it is worth millions. They would have to start Facebook just to buy it and this is no mansion, just a comfortable crib. Next, all they are told is without college you are nothing, yet, if they go they exit with nearly the value of my property in debt. Bernie would have saved them. We fucked up. The 53 percent of White Haters in the lower 48 ruined it all for their own kids, then watched Drumpf and his lackey congress mortgage their country's future to go along with their personal debts. They'll be paying down the deficit long after we are gone, unless the Singularity comes faster than I can possibly hope.
