• There is too much racism in law enforcement and sentencing and government at all levels should mobilize to address this.
  • There is too much money in politics and Citizens United should be overturned.
  • There should be strict separation of Church and State in government and the Hobby Lobby decision should be overturned.
  • LGBTQ rights should be respected and those populations should be protected by government.
  • Global warming is real and American policy should be to combat global warming internationally and domestically, including by supporting the American renewable energy industry.
  • Womens' rights should be protected, particularly in the areas of choice, equal pay, equal access to promotions, and maternity issues.
  • Israel should withdraw from the settlements and/or compensate the Palestinians for them and the Palestinians should get a state.
  • America's (and the world's) wealth is way too polarized, so government should take steps to distribute wealth way more evenly than it is currently distributed. The wealthy should be taxed at higher rates.
  • All Americans should have health insurance, preferably single payer, and all Americans should have access to health care.
  • Minorities have their political, economic, and educational access artificially limited in all sorts of ways. Government should expend more effort on reversing this.
  • High speed internet should be equally available to all Americans and net neutrality should not be replaced by a commercially based tiered system.
  • The firearms industry should face more regulation than it currently does in order to increase public safety, including requiring background checks on private firearm sales.
  • The petroleum industry should not be subsidized and should be held accountable for environmental damage. Environmentally dangerous and damaging actions by the petroleum industry should be curtailed, including fracking, pipelines in environmentally sensitive areas, and offshore drilling.
  • The environment in general should be more protected than it currently is, as seen in places like Flint, Michigan.
  • There is insufficient transparency in campaign funding, so we don't always know who is backing whom, and the public should have access to that information.
  • Government should respect the privacy of Americans and not spy on us.
  • Government should respect and protect the rights of Native Americans, including on issues involving pipelines routed through sacred areas.
  • Government should not increase the privatization of government functions in general. Where privatization has started to occur, we should reverse that trend, including in prisons and military contracting. American highways should not be sold off to the private sector, nor should Federal lands. Social Security should under no circumstances be privatized.
  • Antitrust actions should be used way more than they currently are.
  • There should be stricter FCC limits on how few companies can own how many media outlets in any given market. Standards used to be stricter and we should return to that. Media companies have become too powerful because they have become too close to monopolistic.
  • Corporate officers who break the law, particularly in areas that cost taxpayers millions/billions, should be held personally responsible by the law. "Personally responsible" means doing time for egregious offenses, not just paying fines. Deterrents need to be significant enough to actually work.
  • Financially predatory practices and risky financial practices on the part of banking and insurance institutions should be heavily regulated.
  • The government should not be in the business of supporting private k-12 education but should be in the business of supporting public education more, particularly in poor areas with insufficient tax bases to educate their kids adequately.
  • The Federal Government should hold States accountable for election practices that disenfranchise Black voters disproportionately.
  • The Federal Government should take action to end Gerrymandering. Districts must not be drawn by one political party.

How many of you can name half a dozen members of Our Salon who disagree with any of the above points?

The truth is that there is remarkable political unanimity on Our Salon when it comes to what people would like to see happen, with very few exceptions. Though there are a ton of political arguments here, that's not what they're about. They often pretend to be about allegedly assuming that others here don't hold these priorities, but that assumption is usually false. The arguments are sometimes about which of these priorities are more important to any given individual than others but the real core of most political arguments here involves how to get there.

Sometimes it helps to remember that.

Which is why conservatives should be relegated to permanent minority status.

The educated Left's disgust at the hoi polloi continues ad nauseum. Why is it not overcome in order to achieve some greater goals? Because it is not being imagined but instead experienced daily. A typical cosmopolitan conversation in San Francisco or Los Angeles has no place for the antiquated and dangerous views regularly expressed by those under the hypnotic spell of propaganda, virtually every turn in the conversation would be a war. One side is so educated they not only know all their own world views but nearly always have a better handle on the lies the unsophisticates are told, often knowing so much more about them the whole thing becomes, well, disgust. And anger. Anger that the struggle now continues again as it did in 64 for no good reason other than the Southern Strategy of tricking saps suckers and credulous fools-born-every-day into thinking they are better than others or deserve more, that they actually deserve their own set of entitlements including being able to drive through any neighborhood at night without being stopped! Anger that anyone could be so credulous as to vote for a racist sexual predator over a Grandma who distributed 13 million AIDS vaccines throughout Africa.

I'm not "hard Core" wheel gunner, just that the Ruger was the first pistol I owned and at one time I could draw and pick apples off a tree at 20 yards (well, at least thats the way I remember it.) Other than that, I reload and don't like chasing brass. If it ever came to all out game on, I have a pair of Bryco-Jennings 9's and 10 magazines. ( Yeah, I'm cheap, I buy busted guns and fix them)

Of Course the trick is to use the SKS and my enfield .308 sniper rifle so that I never NEED the handguns.

(or better yet, go "surrender" to the airpolice at the airbase 100 yards up the road, and make common cause with THEM until the unpleasantness passes.)

one thing i do adopt from my colleagues, there are effective strategies everywhere if you can see them, is the old you guess which day the street sweeper may or may not be in the hall closet

kind of a Schrö·ding·er meets the NRA on steroids sort of thing, only you use a calendar to illustrate the point instead of a box

"kind of a Schrodinger meets the NRA on steroids sort of thing" is the best phrase I've read on OurSalon in a long time

"permanent minority status". No argument here

Intellectually, I like Token's preemptive surrender strategy just fine, but I' m such a stubborn fucker I would most likely come down in favor of Maui's Streetsweeper Solution. I'd load that sucker with alternating rifled slugs and double-ought buckshot so I could go out like a scattergun version of Tony Montana - BLAM (dead engine block), BLAM (dead cop or dead postapocalyptic cannibaloid, depending), BLAM (dead engine block), rinse, lather and repeat... Say hello to my little friend!

I see that I'm going to have to go back and read all of the comments that lead up to this page.

True Conservatives always have a permanent majority status of ONE.

I've always subscribed to the Quigley theory of Enemy management. “One kill at 1000 yards makes them keep their distance 100 times better than 10 kills at 10 yards” In other words, keep em off your grass, and you won't have to deal with them in your living room.

Better yet, when the hungry and the homeless come by looking to see if they can steal something, feed them, put them to work and give them a corner of the porch to sleep on. From then on, THEY will keep people from stealing from you.

Also, the thing about surrendering to the air police has a certain aspect in my case that should always be looked into. I know a good many of the airpolice and cops around here because we hang out at the same shooting range. You may not be able to trust the Military or The Police, but you can almost always trust a soldier or a cop.

One of the problems I laugh about with some of these guys is “Survivalism”, cause as soon as I can't get my medicine anymore, I'm probably dead anyway, and I ache so bad from the reminders of past glorious battles, that it won't be too soon. What always puzzles is whether the “Survivalists” are looking to survive, or just a glorious way to commit suicide. ( I blame Video games for a lot of that..)

The best way to survive isn't to win battle after battle, the best way to survive is to make common cause and avoid battles. Don't piss the truly nasty bastards off. ( Or, if that gets to be too much trouble, getting together, getting the truly nasty bastard drunk and then poking his eye out with a big sharpened stick) (Some people you truly can't share a cave with)

PS. Maui I'm not sure I understand the street sweeper in the closet strategy, why not just ALWAYS have it?
