Shrikes and Butcherbirds: Berkeley Undermines the Academy's Core

On Berkeley's cancellation of Ann Coulter's talk--
Given Berkeley's concerns, hiring additional security would be reasonable; censorship is not.
Our nation and our schools have survived far worse division than we now endure without shredding the Constitution, a move Ms Coulter, who will get her fee, will use to further infect minds on the Far Right and Far Left always too ready, as she is, to abandon the Constitution. When in hell will self-righteous prigs learn? What further horrors will have to ensue before some on the Left grasp that freedom, liberty, and Democracy can never be protected by censorship in the sad, old, flimsy guise of 'safety'? The Bill of Rights is not what the censorious of the Far Left/Right want or have ever wanted.
We cannot abide and must be altogether done with academia undermining its own Liberal Arts Core Project. There are more than enough off-campus shrikes and butcherbirds whose aims include that death.

I don't care what they think of Coulter. Keeping her from speaking is bullshit. For one thing, it shows no faith in students.

You'd be surprised, possibly even shocked at how market place oriented academia has become....

No, Ron. I am wholly in touch w it and I think your initial response, while it has merit, is simplistic.

Read and rated, Jon. My comment on JMac's post applies here too.

Most comedians have taken college campuses off of their tour due to censorship in the name of political correctness.  There is apparently no controversy now in academia; no questioning of ideas and practices.

We should all be afraid.

this does little to help prepare intelligent and concerned youth for the real world after they graduate. they are going to be ill-equipped to handle participation inthe messy world of politics, and even more so, life. safe spaces, microaggressions, disagreement free zones are insane. there are now places in Philly which allow students to dine and study in their pajamas, because it's too stressful and objectifying to get dressed.

we are promoting immaturity and infantilism among these kids. The GOP calls them snowflakes, and while unfair and simplistic, is not entirely without basis in certain cases.

Blue Collar folks in colleges are not and have never been this weak. These attitudes are the product of an overly privileged and sheltered existence.

I have to ask. Are you a birdwatcher? Most would not know of the loggerhead shrike. For those who don't know, the shrike catches insects and then impalesnitbin a thorn or barbed wire, killing it and storing it for a future meal. I am not.sure how this relates to censorship, because I always saw them as an example of frugality and future planning.
