Responding to a serious problem

A serious problem requires a serious response. "Turning a blind eye" simply allows the problem to fester and perhaps become critical and beyond the reach of help.

The Search for a Pathway Leading to Deep Inside

The search for a way inside

a place where the soul can't hide

Many pathways of the mind lead in

but which one is right you me

or you

The silence leads me in

The sound of the cicada leads me in

The music leads me in,

right now Jackson Browne

but other artists, too

Displaying courage

in the face of oppression

leads me in

A good joke leads me in…

The Sacred Wind

I would rather create than sit and wait

I would rather keep on trying than succumb

To fate

I don’t believe in fate

Any more than I believe

In the power of hate

Lately I’ve been feeling

We are at the end of night

Lately I’ve been sensing

We are on the verge of rising

To some new height

So don’t allow apathy and cynicism

To shroud the that light that exists

Within your…

Acknowledging Connectedness in Our Lives, and in the Cosmos

I learned, as a poet, to be open to the significance of a single word and to explore its meaning. One word, like freedom, or slavery, or darkness or light, or each distinct color in the rainbow, can connect with many diverse aspects of one’s personal experience. I have also learned to think about the connection that exists between disparate events in one’s personal life, or within our society: like the assassination of Dr. King in Memphis and the massacre committed in that AME church in…

Charleston May Signal a Turning Point

In a nation and world beset by schism, hatred, violence and grinding poverty (experienced by far too many), it would be tempting at this point to simply shut one's eyes to these problems that are so evident. Jackson Browne expressed that idea very well in his song--written way back in 1972--Doctor My Eyes. But people of conscience and possessed of courage will not shut their eyes. They will do what they can to reduce the schism and alleviate the sufferingv

The tragedy of Charleston…

How to Stand Up Against Anti-Science Attacks

The best way to defend against the multiple attacks on science:

*Study science yourself, so you know what you are talking about.

*Gain an idea of what the anti-science people are talking about.

*Be willing to enter into the debate, either through writing or in person.

*Keep your cool.

*be factual.

*Be respectful

*Meditate on the broad interpretation of Jesus' words: "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.".…

Let's Step Up Our Game

Folks with a conscience

Folks who care about self AND others

Folks who abhor violence

Folks concerned about the very poor

and working poor...

Folks who believe "everyone counts

or no one counts"   (Michael Connerly)

Folks who strive to be open

and honest...

Folks who will admit a mistake

and say I'm sorry sincerely...

It's time, it's long since time

to borrow a basketball…

Expanding the Circle: Musings of an Introvert

Largely an introvert, I have recently been reaching out more, to both family and to members of my community, and a broader network of folks online. It has been a slow process, but I have made a number of steps forward:

*Reconnecting with extended family members on my father's side, after many years.

*Joining a poetry discussion group/open mic.

*Started to attend worship services at Unity Church.

*Renewed my application to volunteer in the fall in the Asheville…

Settled In

Settled in for the night No desire to go anywhere No desire to do anything but read and create The animals are calm The traffic is calm The world may be in crisis but we cannot permit chaos from destroying the clarity that exists deep inside

Don't Run Yourself into the Ground

Some folks are tired

tryin' to do what needs to be done...

break down barriers, give love

fight for justice (nonviolently)

Some are tired

but they drag themselves

out of bed everyday

they try to do more

not only for themselves

but for…

Taking Good Care of Self and Others

If I don't take good care of myself

I may get sick trying to help others

I see it asd a balance:

care for self, care for others

Sadly, there are people in our society

who ONLY care for self

and basically don't give a damn about others

That sort of self-endulgence

is not what America is all about

We are a giving people

and let's not lose sight of that fact

but let's also make sure

we are taking good care of ourselves

in the process of…

My letter to USA Today on the Charleston massacre

My letter to USA Today:

The Charleston Church massacre should wake a lot of people up and re-ignite the nonviolent struggle for human and civil rights in this country. I have heard a number of responsible conservative voices raised, deploring this unspeakable act of hate and violence. That is a very good thing, Sane conservatives with a conscience need to realize that their movement has been seriously compromised by racial and religious extremists. My…

Just be yourself when helping

Just be yourself when you reach out to help others of a different race, nationality, religion, etc. No one needs a phony around trying to lift themselves up by "helping."

Making It Back Just in Time

He keeps saying he's coming

but I wonder, will he get here in time?

gonna make it back to the country

even if he has to spend his last thin dime

but I worry, I still worry, will this lost soul

alone in the city, make it back here

before the sun goes down

It's hard to make it back in the darkness

I know for a fact, it's so much easier

in the light of dawn, when you're greeted

by the cry of the dove

When you're greeted by the cry of the…

Rejection of Science by Christians

"You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (Jesus)

Why would Christians reject science? Scientists seek to ascertain the objective truth about external reality, and about the self, through careful analysis of the object of study, while seeking to eliminate the distorting effect of extraneous factors. The scientist seeks to eliminate the effect of personal bias, in arriving at a conclusion. And what's wrong with that? Not to say that a…

5 short poems by Patrick

A light aimed at one of our spacecraft

from Ceres, rogue planet, aliens stranded

on a dying world, lost in space

Maybe like us someday

     Below the white moon

I fumble for my keys, the motor fires

But no place is open to rest my bones

     An old cafe customer watches

Supervisors come and go, the good ones

and the bad, the…
