Good riddance to the pope and the church

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

It’s hard to imagine that people still believe in the Catholic Church.

A quick glance at its history should be enough to convince anyone that any good the institution may have done over the years has been far outweighed by the atrocities, including the Inquisitions, the pogroms, the stealing of the lands of indigenous peoples, and the slaughtering of heretics, Jews, witches and others.

Not to…

Are gay bars going extinct?

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

Gay bars in San Francisco are going extinct. At least according to recent articles in the press, which reports that these establishments are fewer in number than they used to be. In some cases, owners are preferring to have mixed clientele -- queer and straight -- rather than cater to one or the other.

Among the reason for the decline in gay watering holes: greater acceptance of LGBT folks in a city known as the queer Mecca…

I don't believe in Valentine's Day

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

Not because I don’t think love is cool. Who could hate love? Except when it causes people to abuse others or stalk them incessantly. Or it makes them get all domineering and possessive. Like those scary characters on the soap operas and telenovelas.

People don’t talk about this side of love on Valentine’s Day (or they say it's not really love). They only want to think about the mushy stuff that absolutely nobody could…

And the lawmaker of the year with the most stupid legislation is...

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

Tennessee Republican State Senator Stacey Campfield of Knoxville. Trust me, there was stiff competition for the title, but Campfield beats out his Republican comrades who have a long and dishonorable history of concocting some of the worst legislation, not to mention ideas, known to humanity.

Whether it’s proposing that the bodies of rape victims can somehow defy basic biology and stop themselves from becoming pregnant…

No doubt about it, the insane are running the asylum

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

I wasn’t totally shocked when I arrived at the corner of the bus stop yesterday and saw that the bench in front of the little convenience store had disappeared. After all, just a couple months ago, the Castro Benefits District took away the benches at Harvey Milk Plaza, another nearby transit stop, because the neighboring condo owners didn’t like the homeless and those they perceived to be homeless sitting and sleeping on…

Shameless self promotion is next to godliness

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

Music hath power to soothe the savage beast. For me, that beast lives within my own soul. Anyone who knows me is familiar with that raging beast.

I become easily unglued by things that are happening in the world. Both locally and nationally. Politics is a cesspool. A lot of morally deficient individuals out for all that they can get. Doesn’t matter who they step on, as long as they can live high and mighty.…

Founder of Parents of Gays dies: remembering Jeanne Manford

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

There were giants in the earth in those days.

I’m not talking about Biblical days. There were people in the early 70s who championed gay rights at a time when almost everyone else in this country wanted all queers to simply drop dead. The last thing in the world they expected was that we would ever have a shot at gaining basic human rights.

Not Jeanne Manford, a Queens resident and mother who taught in the…

Mortality makes no sense

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

Mortality. The most frightening and beguiling reality that any human has to face about him/herself. What sense does it really make? None that I can imagine.

Being an atheist since I was 16, the Thor-like bully in the clouds threatening us with everlasting hell fire as a way to make us do what he demands vanished from my life a long time ago. It’s all bets off once I close my eyes for that final time. Which, of course,…

Kardashian, Bieber, barf!

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

In the land of the forever shallow and meaningless, news is that Kim Kardashian and her hubbie plan to be “hands on” with the baby that she is carrying. Already she’s been offered millions to allow cameras to record her pregnancy up to the kid’s actual birth.

Meanwhile, that annoying teen star, Justin Bieber, is advocating stronger anti-paparazzi laws because a photographer was killed trying to shoot a pic of the…

Obama tells off republicans, aliens arrive

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

The following are some stories I’d like to see in the papers in 2013. To the strains of “Beautiful Dreamer,” of course.

President Obama tells off the Republicans. Let’s face it, he’s got to have a hell of a lot of pent-up anger inside of him. After all, the party of Michele Bachmann and the gay-bashing, racist, keep-them-barefoot-and-pregnant tea baggers has done everything imaginable to obstruct his agenda. Just once, I’d like to see him…

Silent Night Homeless Night

Check out my latest music video. I re-wrote the lyrics to "Silent Night," which is in the public domain. I first performed it about three years ago with vocalist Diana Petrone Hartman (we called ourselves The Peaceniks back then), and the audience was left in tears. Every year around this time, Diana and I perform the song as much as we can. …

Rosa Maria Mecca: one tough Mama

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

I’ll never forget that evening. It was warm. Indian Summer. It was still light out, as Daylight Savings Time was over a month away. In the working-class streets of South Philly’s Little Italy where we lived, the kids were playing outside on the sidewalk and in the street, and the guys were hanging out, as they tended to do, on the corner outside the butcher shop.

A figure in black was making his rounds, ringing bells, ducking into…

Life's tough choices

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

Being a writer is dangerous. That’s the impression I got from Papa. He didn’t like the idea that I wanted to be a writer. He thought that all literature was somehow subversive. Not to mention pointless.

Everything I needed to know in life, he informed me many times, was contained in tradition. I simply had to live my life according to la via vecchia, the old ways from the old country, southern…
