Bathrooms: the new threat to democracy

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

Have you heard about the latest threat to our democracy?

It’s not some dictator in some country most Americans can’t find on a map, a dictator put into power by the CIA.

It’s not weapons of mass destruction in some oil-rich country. Or even a runaway chunk of space rock that’s about to blow us to smithereens or send us into a new ice age.

It’s people of the “wrong” gender using our bathrooms, violating our sacred trust in…

A master storyteller at work

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

There’s no doubt about it, Jack Veasey is a master storyteller as well as a damn good poet.

Nowhere is that more evident than in The Dance That Begins and Begins, his latest volume of poetry, a collection of work from the 70s to 2013. It’s a marvelous body of poems, one that I’ve found myself going back to several times since it arrived in…

Valentine's Day: celebrating a chemical reaction in the brain

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

What’s not to love about a day that celebrates love and lovers, right? Those who profit from it certainly aren’t complaining.

For them, Valentine’s Day is a cash cow. This year alone, it’s projected to rake in a whooping $19.7 billion for restaurants, flower shops, card companies and other businesses, according to reports from CardHub and WalletHub. The average person will spend $146.84 to impress a sweetie or, more likely, to keep from sleeping…

David Bowie & the gender non conformist

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

I first became aware of David Bowie on my birthday in 1972. My next-door neighbor, who was part of a crowd I hung with, gave me a copy of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, his fifth album. She made some comment about how I would really appreciate it.

Hint, hint.

I had come out a short time before. No one knew yet, though most of my friends (especially my neighbor) suspected I wasn’t exactly straight.…

My collection of poems

I just published a collection of poems, a greatest hits of sorts, on iBooks.

I self-published. I simply used software called iBooks Author that allows you to design your own work and then send it off into the mysterious space that is the internet. It now resides in the iBooks library that Apple maintains. Just like that. No fussing with cover…

When it comes to family, escape is futile

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

December is a difficult month. Not only because of that holiday I hate and try harder every year to ignore, but because December 20 is my Mama’s birthday.

Which shouldn’t be a sad thing, except that she’s been dead for a quarter century. So December is a reminder of the woman who is no longer physically present in my life, but is still there in so many other ways.

Mamas are like that, I guess. I think a father can be forgotten a lot easier…

Trigger happy Americans

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

If the great comic actress Mae West were still alive, one of her most famous jokes would surely be changed to: “Oooh, I see you got a gun in your pocket, you must be an American.”

America may not actually be the most violent country on the planet, but these days it sure seems that way. Just turn on the news. No matter how you define “mass shooting,” there’s been a lot of it going on in big cities and small towns alike.

“Mass shooting…

$13 billion for a frigging warship?!

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

A country that can spend $13 billion on one single warship while millions go hungry every day and countless others are homeless and living on the streets is a country that has absolutely no moral compass. Especially since that same country keeps cutting benefits for those who are down on their luck.

The warship, which will debut in 2016, is called the USS Gerald Ford, named for the president who pardoned Richard Nixon AKA Tricky Dick after he was…

Three reasons to hate Thanksgiving

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

There’s no denying that the popular story of the first Thanksgiving is a cultural myth, promoted by school textbooks that are anything but history. Propaganda’s a more fitting description. Just ask the Texas State Board of Education.

Many historians argue, as Richard Greener related in the Huffington Post, that the first…

Paris: the endless cycle of violence

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

The news from Paris is a horror: at least 128 people mowed down by bullets and bomb blasts at four sites targeted by madmen intent on wreaking havoc on the City of Lights. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for it. The “justification?” France’s intervention in Syria. The old Biblical eye for an eye.

In a world where violence of this sort is an all too familiar occurrence, this massacre strikes a global nerve. Like 9/11. It’s not like…

I despise the blue angels

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

I do.

I hate those damn planes. I hate the sight of them. I hate the god-awful sound they make as they flaunt this country’s military might across the sky. I hate the fact that they’re allowed to fly over San Francisco. What ever happened to San Francisco as the peace and love capital of the world? Wear a flower in your hair? More like ear plugs and gas mask.

The Blue Angels are major polluters. They use a fuel that is highly toxic and…

A southern Italian against Columbus

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

That’s what I’m proud to be.

The genocidal legacy of Columbus is not connected in any way, shape or form to my ethnic heritage or my ethnic pride.

Columbus had nothing to do with Italians. He may have been born in Genoa, but he sailed for Spain, not Italy. There was no Italy at the time he set off in the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Italy became a unified nation almost four centuries later.

When Italians (most of us from…

Pope Francis is not my hero

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

After a succession of absolutely dreadful popes who condemned me as “intrinsically evil” for being queer, along comes Pope Francis supposedly to usher in a “new” church of tolerance and concern about social and economic justice issues.

No need to worry about those nasty priest sex scandals, and the church’s long history of slaughtering people via pogroms, crusades and witch burnings, not to mention its complicity with the nazis to save the…

Homeland security: the new morals squad?

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

“What the hell?!” I screamed at the computer screen as I read about Homeland Security agents carrying out boxes of files during last week’s raid on a New York-based queer website escort service called Rentboy.com.

That raid netted $1.4 million in seized assets. Seven employees were arrested and are being charged under the Travel Act, a federal law that prohibits promoting prostitution. They could face up to five to ten years in jail.

Why…

Toxic babies

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

How many people know that children are being born with toxins already in their bodies, some of which are known to cause cancer and other problems? It’s scary, but certainly not surprising given the messed up environment in which we all live these days.

Tests that have been done on the umbilical cord blood of newborns show tons of chemicals already in their bodies, among them flame retardants, perfluorinated compounds which are found in the…

SF needs to stop violating human rights

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

The federal government has sent a strong message to the city of San Francisco to stop criminalizing homelessness. The UN sent a similar message, but it went totally unheeded.

The messages aren’t directed at San Francisco only. They’re aimed at every city and state in this country where there are anti-homeless laws, for instance, prohibitions against sitting or lying on sidewalks or sleeping in public spaces such as parks.

The UN statement…

How much does it cost to buy a president?

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

That’s the question Americans should be asking. Not how much Hillary pays for haircuts. If they’re not asking it, then they should be listening to someone who used to occupy 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue when he explains it to them.

Former President Jimmy…

Queer homelessness, queer shame

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

Once again for the second time in a row, San Francisco’s biannual Point in Time Homeless Count reveals that 29% of those surveyed identify as LGBT.

It’s not surprising. Little is being done to address the poverty and homelessness that exists in the LGBT…

We’ve got gay marriage, now what?

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

It’s official. A majority of the Supremes proclaimed that the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to same-sex marriage in all states. It is indeed an historic occasion. The love that dare not speak its name is proving these days that it will never be silent again.

This is not something I could've foreseen. When I came out, gay sex was illegal and gay men were routinely subjected to electro shock therapy to try and make them straight. Gay bars…
