Empty Mittens

Empty Mittens

no hands for empty mittens,

no snow can cover up such pain;

insanity, a bitter rain

young faces lost

before the miracle of time

has had them open up

life’s wonderful experiences

tragedy hangs from fireplaces

instead of colored stockings

blessed with treats

we try to understand

but there is not an answer…

Winter Pond

Winter Pond

Once, a frozen lagoon
where we cut the ice with steel
gliding on our way
in a wintry, white December
so long ago;
old, used days
all pave the way of memories
and there remain a group of boys
who gamed plus chased the girls
as we skated on.

I Call You Mine

Recently there was a discussion around another poem by Julie which questioned the feeling of knowing someone, of feeling someone was their own. I admit to this. I admit to wanting this.

I have known this place

your…

Christmas Evidence

Christmas Evidence

Peppermint bark calls to me

not far from where the Christmas Tree

fills the room with pine scent

and anticipation

for the coming of the Lord,

with all tradition wrapped

in celebration

for our favorite time of year;

renewing, rejoicing,

singing carols

and kind voicing,

in a time when all’s not well,

we find…

Snow Turtle

Snow Turtle

Time falls away,

like leaves from a tree

on a late autumn day,

leaving me here in the snow,

an observation in motion,

taking it in

like a sunning turtle on a log;

solar shelled, reptilian philosopher

contemplating life beyond

where the earth collides

with the peaceful the…

Ode to Thing Found in My Cat's Hairball

O whorled, swirled bezoar so spherical,
4/3 Pi r cubed is your volume empirical.

Your coiffure once cloaked points both adjoined and antipodal,
Now shucked, shows your surface to sate the occipital.

Your chatoyant pattern leaves admirers in awe.
Now, if I can just keep shut that cat's gaping maw.

Reflections In A Steamed Mirror

I was in the shower, surrounded by steam,

in the warm, impenetrable wet

that I require, when I remembered

the excursion of your hand

on my skin, the idea

of family that you embodied,

the strength of the pull

that brought us together,

still intact

like a city…

Ghost Of Winter Past

Ghost Of Winter Past

Strange ghost approached me evening last

in search of better times,

I ate the last bread I had found

inside a baker’s empty store

and laughed the laugh of grief

where all the facts  do not add up,

where no mind finds relief

and said, “oh weary spirit

those times are gone,

we sing no song;

can’t mourn our…

the uninvited guest

no one wants to talk about

the uninvited guest

objectionably poised in certainty

everyone gossips fabulous lies entertaining

small talk intriguing questions

inching around intruder

no one wants to talk about

the uninvited guest

joining in holiday cheer infectiously

laughing cold to the touch

gobbling banquet sucking breath from bite

recognizing people and names

with alarming…

The Dance of Salome

On his birthday, Herod gave a banquet for his court,

to which his wife Herodias was not invited.

There Salome, her daughter by Herod’s brother,

danced so boldly and so well that Herod said

he would grant whatever she wished.

Salome left the hall and went to her mother to

ask what she should request, and her mother said

“Ask for the head of John the Baptist,”

who had told Herod that he should not marry his brother’s wife.

The…

"Sweet poesy is not the poet's reward!"

Tis fitting that I should append as comet's tail to fleeting life ,

to unmask as in denoument, the mystery behind my veil.

Most 'nogamous of all my peers my life's played out in singlet form.

The dalliance fine, to stick I fear; no true love's fate, that was my doom.

As callow boy my only went, was find fair wife and breed her well.

But…

Ode To A Ginger

It was the eyes that got me, those eyes,

undecided between green or brown,

the transition betwixt and between

a cosmic riot -

galactic nebulae swirls

like pictures from Hubble,

iridescence that caught the light,

played with it like a lazy cat

then loosed upon…
