"Civil discourse has been described as "the language of dispassionate objectivity", and suggests that it requires respect of the other participants, such as the reader. It neither diminishes the other's moral worth, nor questions their good judgment; it avoids hostility, direct antagonism, or excessive persuasion; it requires modesty and an appreciation for the other participant's experiences."

If I Only Had A Brain

One of the best things I read in 2018 was a Pocket article entitled "The Empty Brain" ( Here's an excerpt:

"No matter how hard they try, brain scientists and cognitive psychologists will never find a copy of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony in the brain – or copies of words,…

Unblocked: (well sort of)

Readers helped, almost as much as rancid break my block. Nothing like getting over food poisoning to improve one’s disposition. Thanks.

I apologize for all of these posts being about me. I read pages and pages of stuff every day...mostly depressing material with far too few positive messages. I shot a lot of grip and grin photos of our kids getting awards and advancement, and then I read horror…

I Kind Of, Sometimes, Liked Ike

My most recent comment, left On this day...

I still have a photo of the young me wearing my "I Like Ike" button. And, he did right in Arkansas, against not a Democrat but someone who was essentially a Dixiecrat, Mason-Dixon be damned. Ike also was responsible for the death of thousands of Latino Braceros in a forced deportation without water into the desert launched by the INS with the lovely name, "Operation Wetback" ... further, every single one of those…

Isn't It Impressive ...

... to have your own blog page? And be a coward who needs to hide behind censorship, a mirror of some of the worst things that you use the forum to present about?

Open Call: how I started blogging

Kosh wants to know, so here's my story.

In 2006 or 7 or so, I met "La Sirenita" online through a different website. (We knew her on Open and here as Sirenita Lake/Cris Guitierrez)

The site had a pretty specific audience, not mainstream at all, really, but the participants were smart and funny and there was some great story telling.  No art stuff. As in any social media site, there was also a lot of arguing and nonsense, but as here, participants could certainly choose not to…

Open Call: My Blogging Journey

I don’t remember exactly how it happened, but in the 1990s I joined an email listserve, The Carl Sagan Mailing List.  I liked the Cosmos series on television and was enamored of the concept that there were “billions and billions” of stars in the universe and the likelihood that we were the only intelligent lifeform in the universe was remote.  I commented occasionally – there were some really bright people on the site who intimidated me – and remember that the discussions went…

Open Call: How did you start blogging?

I know how I came to start but it occurs to me I don’t know how most people did. I’d like to hear your stories. I’ll start with mine:

I started out in a chatroom: Beliefs Judaism on AOL. Chat was OK but it had a couple of disadvantages, and those disadvantages keep me out of chat here. One is that you can be on for a couple of hours with nothing happening, so it just kills time. Another is that when fights break out…

Gods of the Modern World

Gods of the Modern World

“Gods of the Modern World” is one panel in a fresco, The Epic of American Civilization, painted by Jose Clemente Orozco for the Baker Library at Dartmouth. The panel is a critique of the modern university, violent and passionate.

Skeletons robed in academic gowns…

The Smell and the Fury

There was a time, when he confronted the traitor Bork, that I had some amount of admiration for Ralph Nader. It was mixed, as a Super Sport guy I had a problem with his problem with my Big Chevy's little cousin the Corvair, but, that was mostly just thinking of him as a basic dork, which he is and most certainly was. Now, it has been almost 20 years since I stood on a Berkeley street-corner, right near our dear People's Park (which is now in trouble yet again, they want a dorm on it this…

Dear Open Saloners:

I don't come here much, but I have an announcement to make and I couldn't think of a better place to put it. (This will also appear on Orphans of Open Salon on Facebook, so I am addressing both groups at once.)

Some of you will remember me as SageMerlin from Open Salon. I used the sagemerlin account to publish my poetry and Alan Milner for my prose.

I just had one of those possible end of life health scares and, while I am not yet completely out of…
