Monkeys, trains, and more: A two-year-old's video playlist

Julien is almost two and a half years old, and he’s watched his share of videos and TV shows by now.

It was never our intention to plunk our kid down in front of the TV, computer, or tablet all day.  But I have nothing against TV – in fact, growing up, I think I learned a…

Life and Death

Yesterday was my husbands 68th, a reminder to me mine is next month.  For the next month I will get to be his "younger woman".  He will be my "older man".

All I Want Is The Truth

I'm sick and tired of hearing things

From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocrites

All I want is the truth

Just gimme some truth

I've had enough of reading things

By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians

All I want is the truth

Just gimme some truth

~ John Winston Lennon

An American Tune - Lyric and the Passage of Allen Touissant

What with all the violence and racial conflict dominating the headlines over the past week, I feel that I've been reduced to a bystander just shaking my head in numb disbelief of how fundamentally lame human beings can be.  Paul Simon wrote a song that touches on how I'm feeling and the late Allen Toussaint covered it on his last album American Tunes.  I hope you can take the time to listen carefully to Simon's lyric:…

"Heartaches" Through the Decades

This is just a fun post. Much of my earliest memory of music came from listening to the neighbor’s records who were heavily into country music of the late 40s and early 50s.  A little later I had a couple of paper routes and one of them delivered to places like The Oasis and the Dew Drop Inn on the highway.  I liked to go in to collect for the paper and stay as long as they would let me, listening to the music playing on the jukebox. Because of the time,…

Highways of Life; The Grand Strand versus Highway 61 (revisited)

Sparked by a reminder that Bob Dylan is turning 75, I was sent reflecting on the process of poetry and songwriting.  To start I began at the end of a Dylan interview by Zollo in preparation for a book on Singers and Songwriting in which Dylan stated that to write poetry you need to be on the outside; in essence, you need to be rejected by some portion of society.

In typical Dylan fashion some of his…

Roe Family Singers

This group came up in my genealogy search.  I know of no link to this branch of the Roes.

My grandfather and his brothers "played for money".  He was a violinist, though, and not a fiddler.

It looks like this group is having fun.  Who knew there were hillbillies in Minnesota.…

The Boredom of Playing the Canon

I turned on the radio in the car over the weekend and caught the tail end of something on Prairie Home Companion I knew I had to look up. It turns out to be a bit by the cellist occupying the first chair of the New York Philharmonic, Carter Brey. The piece, a little over five minutes long, is about what a cellist thinks when he's bored, and the piece he was playing at the time was the Pachelbel Canon. I can relate.

In the late seventies/early eighties, I played with a Baroque chamber… Continue

Music fundraising

Ranjani Krishnan, a woman originally from India and who now resides in Portland, Oregon, has created an Indiegogo project to help fund her first album. She has a wonderful voice, and has performed with other local musicians. Her musical influences are from India, Spain, North Africa, and other regions. I met Ranjani when she was performing with the group Al Andalus, founded by my first guitar teacher and her husband.

Here's the link to the fundraiser page:…

Couch Surfing… - From 1975 up until some time around 1999, Kevin Crowley and I intermittently crashed on each other’s couches or shared rent as roommates.  Occasionally we worked together and/or found each other work.  We were good friends in fat times and lean.  You’re lucky if you can count your…

1975: Aunt Jean, Ruggles and Jill Baskin

…Aunt Jean,… - Francois’s wife was a plump blonde who drove a very undependable Range Rover and spent his money on clothes.  Her mother had married into money and her Aunt Jean was the family’s poor relation and so she served as cashier and hostess at St. Michel’s.  Aunt Jean came with the…
