For Valentine's Day, a story of real love - in my real life.

Valentine’s Day brings thoughts of love. But mine is not a romance. Instead it is a story of the satisfactions of ordinary life.

My wife and I have been married 40 years now, and have but one child, our son, now 38 years old. He is not married and so we have no grandchildren (sigh). At 40 years, we have a different sort of love than we had when we were young. No more fantasies of nights of passion. We both get up early, she before me, and I am up by 4:30 on weekdays, so by 8 o’clock…

Am I On the Path?

This song is just permanently stuck in my brain as the eternal question:

Where do we go from here now that all of the children have grown up

And how do we spend our time knowin' nobody gives us a…

Human Construct- Religions and Governments

I don't know why, but humans want leaders. Look at the biggest blowhards who scream liberty and freedom the loudest, and they will be the first one to want a leader when something needs done. It's hard to say if humans have always had leaders, given the lack of legible records from the prehistoric days, but let's say that yes, there have always been alphas in the ranks. When did it become more about power…

If we let them massacre the truth, we live in their reality

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

I grew up in their version of reality.

In the 50s, Communism was evil and Capitalism was good. Free speech was censoring movies, books and TV, and questioning students on college campuses. Queers and trans people were sick and perverted, a threat to truth, justice and the American way. A commie lurked around every corner.

In Catholic school, sex education was telling us not to…

Bad News and Good News from Texas

This post evolved out a comment that I left on aka's post: The Facade of Tranquility

When I made the decision to move back to Texas back in September of 2016, I had some significant concerns about whether or not I could adapt to the rampant prejudice and bigotry that I'd encountered growing up in the Lone Star State.  Could I find it in…

Customs Inspection at LAX 1990

Why doesn't this surprise me: Border agents defy courts on Trump travel ban.  It's really nothing new.

I worked for Beta Magnetics Shenyang Computers, a Joint Venture Corporation, in the People's Republic of China for a year in 1990-91.

In the early 1980's my boss, Mark Yaftibadi, came to the USA along with his…

Last Man Standing

I have no idea if the end of the book I’m currently writing has anything to do with this—maybe—but I’ve been wondering lately what my future will be like at the end. I can’t help but shake I’ll be alone. And I don’t mean abandoned. I mean everyone else will pass before I do. Dying has always seemed very daunting and scary to me. But if you were surviving and everybody else around you was kicking the bucket long before your timer went off? That’s almost more terrifying.

When my husband…

Losing It

The Day Dream.

Source of Creativity and Escape

Thirty years or so ago a psychiatrist came to address our service club about Alzheimer’s disease.  Jokingly, he said, “Forgetting where you left your keys is not dementia.  Forgetting what they are for is.”

I don’t think I have impending dementia, but I…

Sometimes They Say Goodbye

A former boss, Cindy Medley, who was also a wonderful friend passed away last December. She was, to those of us who knew her, extraordinary. I won’t repeat what I’ve already said about her in my blog post last month after her passing, but I do want to tell you about something that happened last Sunday night. It involves her, and it’s not what I think of as an isolated case.

I fell asleep and dreamed I was back in college at GVSU. I was taking some sort of class in the old video studio…
