Lavender Commencement talk to Samuel Merritt University, May 2014

This is my 2nd invitation here: thanks to Cecily Crosby and Craig Elliott for the first one; and now to Anglyn Sasser and the whole SMU Pride Committee.

On my first visit to Merritt, after showing our film Transgender Tuesdays, in response to a question I think I went on about how to approach patients in a way that elicits their input, finding out what they consider important, rather than beginning with the stereotypical, “How can I help you?” I am pretty sure it was…

The fish with the opposable thumb

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

We are mutated fish.

Despite how different we look, we are not that much different from the creatures who swim in the oceans and rivers. We have the same organs. We share half of the same DNA. And the bones of our arms evolved from fish fins.

If you don’t believe me, check out a wonderful PBS series called “Your Inner Fish” that’s based on a book of the same name by Neil Shubin, a paleontologist and…

Obituary for Edwin Huntington Parker

This is an obituary I wrote for my friend Edwin Huntington Parker. He was known as Hunter to his friends. I originally submitted this article to the "Philadelphia Daily News".  I was unhappy when the obituary ran in the paper with another writer's name on it and Hunter's name misspelled. The "Daily News" published a correction that said I provided the information. Unfortunately someone could interpret that I provided the misinformation. I am publishing the original obituary…

Nobody would believe me!

Nobody will believe me anyways, so I might as well tell my version of the story...

...but there I was, standing on the corner of Eastern and Arizona, waiting for a bus when the world just decided to end.

Just like that, no news report, no fanfare, it just went poof.

Everyone but me and my best friend, who happens to be imaginary, were gone.

There was still a bird who flew backwards and a cat…

A LIST TO LIVE BY - Really? NAH!

According to some folks; bright, beautiful, intelligent people, I should make a list of things to do to make my life better.

I agree.

Lists of such things are important, puts the eye to the prize, gives me a goal to achieve (or something), maybe even keep me alive for at least six months to a year.

My doctor (a former patient at the state hospital who I talk to at the bus stop. If he takes his medications, he's quite…

Why Leonardo DiCaprio Deserves the Oscar: It's About Time, Don't You Think?

Originally on The Huffington Post, February 17, 2014

As Oscar voters continue to mark their ballots until this Wednesday, I wonder what goes into their thinking? Do they vote specifically for what they believe is the best achievement of last year, a surprising performance and accomplishment or is it a…

Jerry Brown honors vile ex-president

by Tommi Avicolli Mecca

In declaring February 6 “Ronald Reagan Day,” California Governor Jerry Brown recently said, “On this 103rd anniversary of his birth, we remember not only his most celebrated achievements – his successful diplomacy with Mikhail Gorbachev and the economic recovery that occurred under his presidency. We also remember the turbulent years of his governorship, during which he proved his ability to manage the affairs of the state, and…

Duck You, And The Horse You Rode In On

Between 1971 to 1979, "All In The Family", on CBS, reigned supreme as the top rated teision sitcom. For the first five of those years, it was the Nielson top rated television program...The record of 5 consecutive years as the most watched television show in America stood until "American Idol" came along.....

Archie Bunker, the patriarchal everyman, was the 'lovable' bigot, who, on air, would express his prejudice and disdain for literally everything/everyone that wasn't white,… Continue

Yossi (2013) -- movie review

Ten years have passed since Yossi (Ohad Knoller) kissed his dying lover in Etyan Fox's Yossi and Jagger, and this appropriately named sequel follows up on the surviving protagonist most realistically. Fox's original gay romance stands up as a very good film; this sequel is even stronger. It…

The Crimson Jesus Chronicles: Chapter Four

Chapter 4 : quatto saves Crimson Jesus, don’t know much biology, an arrest is made

I had thought that things had settled into a quiet routine, but I was wrong. The velvet Jesus folks have been very busy, scrubbing the pigeon shit off of Jesus’ shoulders and head. It seems oddly symbolic, and yet weird at the same time.

Of course, as soon as they are done, there is more the next day. Satan’s pigeons are relentless, and apparently have enlisted the help of other local…

The Crimson Jesus Chronicles - Chapter Three

Chapter Three - Kojak Goes Goat, Bionic Mary, and Satan’s Pigeons.

It has been a busy week here in Looney Land. Greg called me Monday night to say he has been sent cross-country on business, so can I please keep Kojak for another week? Like I would have a problem with that. I’ve actually gotten three phone numbers from some pretty cute ladies while I was out walking him. I guess my response to “Oh! Is he friendly? Can I pet him?” (which is always, “He is friendly. OVERLY…

The Crimson Jesus Chronicles - Chapter One

Chapter One -  New Neighbors,  Hellhounds And Goats, Jesus Arrives

*(updated 11/8/13 - since this looks like it will be an on-going tale, I've decided to write a chronicle of it in chapter form. Consider this Chapter One)

I got home from work yesterday morning to the sound of hammers and saws. The Velvet Jesus people were toiling diligently in the back yard on what I assumed was some kind of deck or platform or something having to do with the upcoming barbeque. I decided…
