Twas the Night of Black Friday

Twas the night of Black Friday, and all through the towns

Eager shoppers had hunted for the best bargains around.

They showed up in droves, stood in line before dawn,

To ensure they got the deals before they were gone.

When the doors opened, they pushed and they shoved.

They had to get perfect gifts for the ones that they loved.

It didn’t matter how much money they spent,

The look on their faces would be worth years of…

Diving Off A Short Pier

Last Spring it was incredibly warm. I'm not talking about 40 degree heat after having had light snow fall and everyone starts putting shorts on. It was nearly 80 degrees. This particular month was the warmest on record. In fact, in April the temp went back to normal.

I walked into work like any other day but on this day I had a field trip…

Letter to Obama

Dear President Obama:

Today my unemployment benefits ended.  They were scheduled to end 12/29, (which, itself is premature), but they stopped short.   I didn’t think this crisis could get worse, but now I know it will.  In effect, I’ve been thrown off the fiscal cliff.  Imagine the Thanksgiving I will have without any money.

Mr. President, not only do I WANT to work, I NEED to work.  I’ve been on my own and working since I was fifteen.  I worked my way through college twice,…

Grover Norquist Collateral Casualty of 2012?

In light of the election post mortems taking place among conservatives, perhaps no one is more delusional, with the exception of Karl Rove, than Grover Norquist. Norquist, a high priest of limited government, is having nothing to do with the reality borne of Mitt Romney's defeat. Rather than to see in that defeat the rejection of four years of anti-government attacks and ideas, Norquist would have us believe that Tuesday night's results have simply "confirmed the status quo of…

Hanging Off the Fiscal Cliff

Paul Krugman and I agree....the fiscal cliff is a complete and total myth, a creation of the conservative entertainment complex.  The fiscal cliff myth was created by the Radical Republicans to use as a bargaining chip to keep the Bush tax cuts in place a bit longer.

The truth is really quite simple.  The credit rating of the United States doesn't matter because there is no place else for the wealth of the world to go but into US dollars.  The Chinese cannot pour their ill-gained…

Memo to my Liberal and Progressive Friends - Stop Spreading the Blues

I vowed a return to a post 2012 election sense of normalcy when I realized the election was over. This happened as I watched the late returns from Northern Virginia foreshadow a long night for Mitt Romney and a glorious night for the man New York Times Columnist Maureen Dowd calls “Barry”. On that night as I did in the winter of 2009 after the Inauguration, I promised to re-shift my focus away from politics and toward my creative pursuits. In 2009 Facebook and Twitter were mere…

Not exactly the first post I had in mind, but inspiration struck...

The elections are finally over. To me at least, it felt like they would never end, between the primaries that seemed to go on forever, and the long general election. I must admit, I followed them on and off, and even when I was watching some news every day, the news I'm referring to was the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and the Colbert Report. Not exactly serious news, but they did get the information across, as silly as they may be.

That brings me to the inspiration for today's…

Strain in the marrage: The state of Red Texas' union with the US

Those of us who've been through divorce know the signs of trouble.  Tolerance of each other's eccentricities turns into extreme annoyance.  Short-hand references and shared jokes become verbal bludgeons turned against each other.  Friends begin choosing sides.  And the kids suffer.

In the aftermath of President Barack Obama's robust victory over Mitt Romney this week, "Red" Texas has been showing the signs of a spouse wanting a trial separation.  …

The Brilliance of Oregon's Mail-in Ballot

It's Election Day 2012 today.

Voting was pleasant as usual here in Oregon. I drove up to the ballot box and hopped out, took my photo of the ballots going in the box (although this is not necessary, they say, I do it anyway), and waved to several women I knew. One was passing out her left-over Halloween candy to any interested sweet-tooths. A few cyclists rode up and we laughed at the jostling to put our ballots in the box. Then, I hopped back in my truck and we…

So, What's Next?

Kid in Bathroom
OK. The election is over and your candidate lost. What do you do? Do you wish him well and try and work with the other side to make this country a better place, or do you do a "Mitch McConnell"  and do everything in your power to screw-up everything he tries to accomplish. In other words, do you help the man you voted against try and fix all the things that are wrong with this country? Or do you  join a "Down with…

One Sentence Monday/Tuesday depending on your time zone

As long as you're not a pregnant rape victim, disabled, trying to afford college, Hispanic, gay, middle class, female, in the military, rich, a banker, someone with a loan, needing medical attention, poor without a driver's license and trying to vote, a homeowner, someone who mails letters, living with the consequences of global warming, or benefitting from federal disaster relief, the parties are pretty much…
