Pollster Lou Harris Dead at 95

Pollster Lou Harris Dead at 95:  Lou Harris, the influential pollster and political consultant who was among the first to provide polling services directly to candidates and officeholders, died in Key West three weeks ago at the age of 95.  Ironically, a recent Gallup poll found that only 31% of the Americans were even aware that Lou Harris was still alive.  In related news, a memorial concert is being planned for February with promotors hoping to get Emmylou…

Rapture Flounce (42)

in memoriam August von Doggus 2005-2016 (and all the other OS'ers who've passed.....)

original post April 19, 2015

It's closing time at the Restaurant at the End of the universe. As the universe fades in the background, the Maitre 'd approaches and says softly, "Your car has arrived, sir". You turn to him smiling and say,"I must complement the management, Gabriel, quite a good show this…

That's so I'll remember its name. There's a word for gimmick-to-remember-by, but I forget it. Oh okay, mnemonic. I sort of remembered it, but can be excused for not having it clear in my head. What kind of a word is that? And…

Not Sure Why but This Seems to be an Appropriate Salute to New Year's Eve 2017

My resolution for 2017 is "No Whining about anything and No Comment about anything Trump, the Beast whose Name shall not be written nor shall I utter."

Therefore I look to Medieval Illustration and the magical whims of the great Terry Gilliam to celebrate the noxious odor of 2017:…

Next One !

My Irish buddy says "Next One ! ", or at least did, after working on our most arduous days. Some of our under-house reconstruction jobs meant hours on our backs with the same tools needed when one is standing and building. It would be incredibly difficult and painful, and at the end of the day our primary thought was to get away from it. We were glad to be…

Behind The Scenes With Gas Monkey Garage

Leake 09

The "Fast And Loud" TV show is filmed right here in Dallas. It films the cars and antics of Richard Rawling's Gas Monkey Garage and if you're lucky you can catch them in the act. But I didn't need luck as I knew they would be at the Leake auto auction that comes here twice a year. So I grabbed my camera and hiked on over to take a behind-the-scenes…

Among the Old School Nude Rappers

Rap record company Strange Music has a strict code of conduct that forbids employees from stripping naked during the workday unless their clothes “are actually on fire.”

I was sitting in the offices of Proctoscope Records with BackWurdz, my rap sidekick since the late XXth century, looking over sales figures.  It wasn’t easy reading…

Burger King Announces Antibiotic-Free Chicken for 2017

Burger King Announces Antibiotic-Free Chicken for 2017:  Fast-food chains Burger King and Tim Hortons announced that next year they will begin serving only chicken raised without the use of antibiotics.  They really had no choice.  Hell, when the Republicans get done with Obamacare - those chickens won’t be able to afford antibiotics anyway.…

By The Pricking Of My Thumbs...

December 30, 2016

To all of my readers, both here in the United States and abroad, I'd just like to thank you very much for your readership over the last few years. It has been a treat to write for you, and I hope sincerely that you have enjoyed it half as much as I have.

I think we can all agree that 2016 has been a year we'd mostly like to forget. And 2017 doesn't look to be all that much better, but it's the future so it's uncertain, so there's still hope.

I'll be…

The Primacy of Soft Power

While practitioners of and believers in of Realpolitik believe that military force (and its cold, self-interested use) is the final determining factor in a geopolitical contest, they and their fellow-travelers often forget that this factor is less meaningful in the long-term than those aspects of "soft-power," such as culture, law, trade and the like.

Obviously realists have a point when they say that raw tangible power, order and influence are of greater proximate importance than…

Christmas Dinner, ho ho ho (hum)

Don't usually do anything for Christmas.  But this year my younger daughter L thought it would be nice to invite our reno guy for a meal.

Rob has grown daughters, who seem to be closer in both senses to their mother and her current husband and their kids.  He also has a brother in Van, whom he consults on construction matters, but doesn't seem to visit much.  Well, it's a long trip in an old truck that uses a lotta gas.  And there's another brother who made tons of money and is now…

FDA Approves Ruffled Nightgowns for Birth Control

WASHINGTON, D.C.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration yesterday approved the use of ruffled nightgowns as birth control following a two-year clinical trial that found them to be a “safe and very effective” way of preventing pregnancy and even intercourse.

“Just try it, sucker.”

“The results were conclusive,” said Dr. Emil Nostrand of the agency’s Center…

Obama's Mess Pile

Obama’s Mess Pile

“We/I inherited from Bush the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression.” Sound familiar? It should. Obama and his minions uttered it continually throughout Obama’s long tenure to apply a magnifying glass to the tepid economic recovery of the U.S. that occurred during it.

The economic disarray that Bush left Obama is a molehill compared to the mountain of mess that Obama is amassing for Trump. And he’s doing it with shocking disregard…
