911 2017

hi all. have been blogging on 911 over 7 years now, originally on open salon, with nearly my earliest post (2nd iirc), now over ½ the time since the event itself. some of my best content vaporized on that site, and a few 911 posts had thousands of hits over the years. would like to go rescue it, but its a huge job. open salon was able to materialize a small cadre of dedicated alternative political writers for a brief window, it was unprecedented.

the sands of time have covered up some…

I Told You So - 25 September 2017

Another in another on-going series of self-congratulations: recall missives discussing both the Fed's unloading of Treasuries and any hint of an organic interest rate inversion? The latter can be enhanced by the former, but, as organic says, can happen out in the real economy all by its lonesome. The result of the former is to push supply of Treasuries, thus dropping the auction price of new issues, and concurrently upping the resulting interest rate. Since these are long term (Treasuries…

Some of the past stays in the past

Though the following were immediate predecessors of the music that formed the earliest rock and roll, and some of the singers (Sonny Till for one) would have been considered stars in their heyday, this music is mostly forgotten now.

Listeners will likely dismiss it as “doo wop” - a term that no one used when the Ravens shared the bill with the King Cole singers.  Or when Gene Mumford…

Let's Get A Few Things Straight:

Tweets are not rhetoric.

Protest is not disrespect.

Health-care insurance is not health care.

Cutting taxes for the wealthy and corporations is not tax reform.

Invective and epithets are not legitimate or appropriate elements of foreign policy.

Racism, xenophobia, and bigotry are not legitimate or appropriate elements of immigration law and/or policy.

Kushner Using Private E-mail Account for White House Business

Kushner Using Private E-mail Account for White House Business:  According to a new report, Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner has been using his private email account to conduct official White House business.  While that certainly exposes a huge hypocrisy on their part, I suppose one could argue what state secrets could Kushner possibly reveal that Donald Trump hasn’t already made public in some early morning volcanic tweet storm? …

Music for the DMZ

Watching the new Ken Burns movie about Vietnam, I am returned to my youth.  I was 15 in 1966 when the war really heated up, 17 in 1968 when all hell broke loose and I turned 18 in 1969.

Though the music I really loved was soul music (and ecclesiastical music too) my memories of the war years seem to go better with the white Rock & Roll.

The following are five suggestions for music to play at the DMZ.  I would love to hear other suggestion too.

White…

Don't Mess with Texas?

One of the more annoying bits of propaganda to emanate from the Right Wingnuts over the years was that Texas was special, and that Texans should really invoke their right to secede (there isn't one, as it happens). Texas has been, for the last century or so, just a bunch of Blue Eyed Arabs, sucking at the hind teat of petro. Geology has gotten smarter over the century, but it doesn't create that black goop. Either it's there or it isn't.

So, of course, they haven't seceded and want…

Yes, You Are STUPID!

Twice this week I've seen TV morons emphatically declare you can't call people stupid, as if everyone deserves a participation trophy just for being born. Well, you know what I think of that? I think it's STUPID! It's an idiotic… Continue

The Decisive Moment

Ok, that title is borrowed from Henri Cartier-Bresson, that brilliant photographer who did the first genuine street photography.  He used 35 mm film and the Leica when most professionals relied on a large format camera, usually the 4x5.

I thought of him yesterday when my assignment was to shoot…

A Case Study about Health Care Costs

I thought I would add a case study that illustrates what happens in our current health care / health insurance market when someone needs care.  The case study comes from care that was needed to after a single event.  An accident.

It is useful to understand just how much or how little many know about health care and health insurance.

As an insurance insider I see much misinformation bandied about in the press.  Examples of misinformation include the idea that merely by living…

Awakening Supervolcano Threatening Naples Area

Awakening Supervolcano Threatening Naples Area:  Scientists have discovered a “hot zone” feeding the Campi Flegrei supervolcano near Naples in southern Italy, prompting fears it is nearing eruption - threatening catastrophe for the 1.5 million people living in the region.  In a series of angry early morning tweets, President Trump warned that an attack on an ally like Italy would be considered an attack on the United States and promised to bomb the volcano…

Why don’t I pay my children for their grades?

This is a topic I should have posted about 35 years ago, when my older daughter was 14.

My daughter says the other kids get paid for their grades. She doesn’t think it’s fair that I won’t pay her for hers.

I have rules for things I pay for. I pay for services, that are of no benefit to the person performing them, but are important for my quality of life, such as paying the plumber to fix my leaky faucet. I pay for things I want and need, like groceries or new shoes. I pay for…
