And Then I Entered...the Twilight Zone (OS Archives 2011)

~ A true, scary tale ~

The dream haunted me for years when I was a girl, circling around with other recurring nightly visitations that all conspired to prevent a sweet dream from ever gracing my childhood slumber. This particular dream series repeated each time with little variation of detail and no variation in terror, producing an ever-growing sense of claustrophobia in my awake world as well. Each vivid detail kept its sharp clarity, even when the dream quit…

She Really Loved Her Pets...

She had finally gotten home. Long day, glad it is over. Home was her safe haven and she had finally made it there. Going inside, she was greeted with the joyous abandon of her furry friends. Three dogs of her own, several that belonged to the family, and quite a few cats. The pair of finches and the parakeet set up a racket, too, startled at all of the noise.

"Oh, you guys! I'm so glad to see you, too," she cried, sitting down on the floor so that they could mob her. Dog tails…

Progressive Strategic Stupidity

originally published Oct. 28, 2011 on Open Salon. Not too many people really address this topic, which I find odd.

I recently read a comment that the Traveler made about the OWS movement on Barbara Joanne's blog: "This entire thing is frustrating because the movement is frittering away some of their moral authority by their stupid, stupid tactics." (This post is an expansion of an answer I gave on that blog.) His suggestion was that the protesters make a…

In and Around the Lake With Jon Anderson

I love the complex, trippy songs that YES has produced since they first formed in 1968. The voice of the progressive rock band YES is Jon Anderson, not Benoit David, in my humble opinion. I was disheartened when I first heard of the life threatening acute respiratory failure incident that pulled Anderson out of the Chris Squire, Steve Howe, and Alan White lineup. But even more disheartened to hear that YES was continuing to tour without Jon even when he had…

Eli was born at Truman Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri by emergency c-section.

Truman is the "public hospital" or at least used to be. It's the place where the indigent go, victims of violent crime, the ones who waited through sickness until nearly dead before finally attempting to get treatment, and people like us.

Many of Truman's bills were forgiven, as was mine. It was the equivalent of a years'…

Sunday Fall Bicycling

My bicycle is an old- make that really old Schwinn that was a gift to me. It was a friend's son's bike when he was a young teen, gathering dust while hanging upside down in their garage since those days. Now, the son is a thirty-ish.

Of the previously available 21 gear settings, there are three usable now due to a locked up rear derailleur; 7th, 14th, and 21st. I opt for 7th most of the time.

The back wheel is bent in one spot, so once every revolution it…

867-5309 KC first Friday date night

Last night was pretty neat, a date with no plan whatsoever that ended up being one of the funnest evenings I can remember in quite a while.

Her to me--"what shall we do?"

"I was thinking supper at Sonic."

"Ewww, you know tonight is first fridays, right?"

I took her last month and she remembered... good girl!

I had totally forgotten! The first friday of every month there is a street celebration in the part of downtown Kansas City, Missouri now known…

I Want a Corporate Handout

OK. Maybe not a handout per se, but here’s my proposal in response to the Occupy movement: every large corporation should adopt a small business that is working in the arena of innovation. Most specifically, this is a self serving vision: I would like my business, FullThought, to be matched with a corporate partner.

Here are the basics to my thoughts: besides large profits, many corporations have generous budgets to work with; most of the rest of us don’t; not only is wealth…
