Meeting Muhammad (OS Archive - 2010)

Day after day at work, I noticed him, sitting at one of the many scattered tables placed between the indoor pool area and the basketball court -- watching, perusing, assessing.  At least, that's what he seemed to be doing.

It was late September, 2002. Our country had just marked the first anniversary of 9/11's horrors, I'd just marked my second year of working at the Alpharetta, Ga. YMCA.

I wasn't sure how I'd ended up here, in one of the more traditionally homogeneous…

The most expensive mistake in history?

Originally published Sept. 24, 2010 on Open Salon

I came up with the basic idea behind this post (not  the title question, which is fairly recent) about twenty-five years ago. I just never had a place to put it before.

My candidate for this is an error made by Karl Marx. As mistakes go, it's somewhat obscure, innocent, completely understandable, and probably inevitable given the information he had at the time, but it's a complete game…

A Baker's Dozen of Random Personal Tidbits (OS Archive - 2010)

1.  One of my favorite toys as a child was a homemade guillotine my brother gave me.

2.  My Bachelor's degree is in Fashion Design and Marketing and I can sew most anything well... I currently buy most of my clothes at a thrift store because I love to.

3.  Defecting to Russia to be a gymnast was my childhood dream.  I couldn't get enough of those giant bows in their hair, and they lived full-time at gymnastics school.

4.  The best city of all to visit in my…

Taxation is like football - a liberal case

originally published Sept. 21, 2010 on Open Salon

In keeping with RW005g's latest post about narrative and the liberal cause, I'll take a shot, using an analogy I've never used on OS. I'm not saying I won't miss, but I'll take a shot:

The conservative approach to taxation (and, for that matter, to regulation), like that used by George W. Bush, is like a football coach who befriends the biggest guys on his team. In order to protect them and do them a favor, he…

I've Had the Time of My Life, Bill Medley

Happy birthday, Bill Medley! Another rock and roll milestone is marked when he turns 70 years old on September 19th. Best known for his collaboration with partner Bobby Hatfield in the duo The Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley’s voice is unmistakable to me. That…

You've Made Me So Very Happy, David Clayton-Thomas

"You've made me so very happy

I'm so glad you came into my life"

I first heard David Clayton-Thomas in 1968 when he was lead singer for the group Blood, Sweat & Tears. And now, he like many of my other favorites, is skipping towards his golden years. David will be 69 years old on September 13th. I still envision these bands of my youth as the flowing haired singers I grew to love. Am I stuck in…

Why is Islam being demonized more these days?

originally published Sept. 13, 2010 on Open Salon

An online Jewish friend of mine who I know from when I used to frequent a Jewish chatroom (from where I also know Jonathan Wolfman) and who is way more conservative politically than I am forwarded me an e-mail from a Christian woman from Lebanon. This woman went through a lot of horrific sectarian experiences there and was essentially e-mailing to tell everyone concerned how the Muslims really were out to…

I'll Stand By You, Chrissy Hynde!

Happy Birthday Chrissie Hynde! Yes, this is another one of my birthday tributes to a performer who has given me countless hours of joy. Chrissie turns 59 years old on September 7th.  For me she epitomizes the great combination between strong, soft, sexy, and edginess. And to be perfectly honest the very first time I saw her I thought she was a bit scary. But then that tremolo technique in her voice with its wide, slow vibrato drew me in with its ability to be powerful…
