A South Seas island tribe worships boxing promoter Don King.

Praise the Lord!
I have come to Vanuatu as so many pilgrims have before me, seeking religious freedom. The freedom to worship as one chooses is a basic human right, and yet people of my faith–the Church of Don King–are persecuted wherever we go.
Just as the Puritans were driven out of England, just as…Continue

Duke University to Remove Robert E. Lee Statue: Duke University president Vincent Price has authorized the removal of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s statue from the front of the school chapel after students made very clear they don’t want the Confederate monument there anymore. Let me get this straight, Vincent Price is now running Duke University? And I suppose if he hadn't agreed to remove the statue, he would have been replaced by Bela Lugosi? And is it just me,…Continue
Some periods of history seem more frightening than others. In my lifetime I was too young to be worried by the events of WWII. I lived through a tour in Vietnam, never had to worry about food or health until old age, and lived through the height of the cold war with the persistent threat of total nuclear annihilation. All of that sounds bad, but it was really one of the more secure periods of history.
It was called the Spanish Flu, and it was the deadliest influenza…Continue

Last Saturday, an American Nazi brutally murdered a young woman who had taken to the street in Charlottesville, Virginia to counter-protest against white supremacists.
The victim's name was Heather Heyer, and our president used the occasion of her death that day to draw a false equivalency between violent, hateful racists and the people who oppose them. Never mind that…Continue
Labels in jazz are often flags of convenience that mask the identities of musicians whose talents are more varied than a single ensign would suggest. One such mismatch is “hard bop,” coined by jazz critic and pianist John Mehegan of the New York Herald Tribune to describe music that developed on the East Coast in the late 1950’s as a reaction to the “cool” jazz of the West Coast. The earliest and longest-running school for the…Continue
"No Essex officer returned. ... Out of 30 officers who lived together at Aldershot and previously, I am the only original. Others had been transferred or were shot down in France.... Lads say they are glad I…
The only thing I remember from kindergarten (other than the distinctive smell of paste) was the red, white and blue ribbon the teacher gave me when I correctly answered a question about American history, thus beginning my lifelong love affair with learning about America’s past. I think the teacher’s question was about George…
Steve Bannon Out as White House Chief Strategist: President Trump's controversial chief strategist Steve Bannon is leaving the White House, in another major staff shakeup announced at the close of yet another tumultuous week in Washington. Wow, talk about draining the swamp. On a positive note, now Bannon will be free to start drinking his bourbon in the morning. Hell, the way things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump decides to fire himself. Of…Continue

Real art emerges as a lucky break granted to makers by fate or perhaps the gods. The maker may be flawed and may not deserve the gift, but that does not matter. Thus the artist may be an asshole or a bigot or even the absolutely worst person. But in the end it does not matter. The work is the only thing that matters - as far as the work in concerned. (So it is that Woody Allen and Roman Polanki’s art is worthy regardless of their…Continue
is this the same guy? Mr. "“I'm carrying a pistol, I go to the gym all the time, I'm trying to make myself more capable of violence.”?
doesn't he want to try out his well honed testosterone and muscle with some down and dirty in your face, pol-icey violence?
As, I suspect, most folks have done, I took it as an article of faith that Bannon's fortune (whatever it may be) was made at Goldman. The fact that he pronounced himself a Leninist never made much sense. Nor, as mentioned in earlier missives, how he or Donald J. Quisling or any President could compel corporations to practice economic nationalism. You have to be a dictator to force corporations to…Continue
Bannon is out, but will that make any difference?…Continue
This past week has been an eye-opener for many Americans. Setting aside Trump’s bellicose statements toward North Korea’s dictator Kim Jung Un, events at Charlottesville, VA and Trump’s subsequent remarks, have revealed to anyone who had any lingering doubt that POTUS 45 is too unstable and incompetent to govern.
In fact those are essentially the words that Sen. Bob Corker (R) from Tennessee, and Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, used to describe the president.
