Pastors Say God Punishing Texas for Not Passing Anti-Trans Bathroom Bill

Pastors Say God Punishing Texas for Not Passing Anti-Trans Bathroom Bill:  Several pastors this week have been claiming Hurricane Harvey is God’s way of punishing Houston for not passing an Anti-Trans Bathroom Bill and for having “a very, very aggressively pro-homosexual mayor.”  Wait a minute - Canada passed laws protecting gay and trans rights.  Makes you wonder, what the hell does Canada need to do to get noticed by the almighty?…

Are Houston's Oil Refineries a Victim of Their Own Device?

A recent post by Ron Powell discussing the personal nature of the affect of Hurricane Harvey  on members of his own family, as well as a comment by moki ikom about depletion of aquifers on ground level set me off on an search for projected Texas coastlines secondary to climate change.

That turned out to be harder than I had anticipated.

What I noticed was that there are articles about various changes in climate with strategies to address them, but no serious long term…

Going Electronic and other Pieces of My Mind

I've written a lot of blog posts since I first started in 2006. Less in the last couple of years, but I've countered the effort with movie reviews on IMDb, book reviews on amazon, and lots of time shooting my mouth off on Facebook and occasionally on OurSalon. The last few months I've been reading over the…

The Remnants of Harvey and Visiting at the Home

We are dealing with the remnants of Tropical Storm Harvey in what is known as the Mid-South.  Forecasts yesterday were for about six inches of rain in the Memphis/West Memphis area today and this evening.

For some reason we planned to go to Overton Square, an area of restaurants and boutiques in Memphis that we enjoyed when living in Memphis in the late 1970s.  Our niece, C, and my wife drove in torrents of rain.  We had lunch under a porch as the sky fell.  The food and drink were…

This Letter I Got in My Email This Morning

Not sure how I got this letter, and I've never heard of Reagan Reports (although I've heard of Michael Reagan), but it showed up in my inbox this morning, titled, Trump Backed into Corner, Sharks are Circling (why I clicked on it).

This is what *some* are being told/believing!! I was shocked:…

Houston we have a problem... but this is too cool!

My heart goes out to all of the good people in Texas who are suffering through the effects of Hurricane Harvey.

(the not so good ones, like Ted "Fuck them Hurricane Sandy Victims" Cruz and Joel "Hell no you can't come into my church!  It's only for paying Christains!" Osteen can go choke on a bag of waterlogged dicks.)

That said, this is so far past cool that my head's about to…

Osteen Claims Megachurch Didn't Open Doors Because Houston Didn't Ask

Osteen Claims Megachurch Didn't Open Doors Because Houston Didn't Ask:  Pastor Joel Osteen has been making the rounds of the talk show circuit, offering his explanation as to why he didn’t offer his 16,800-seat megachurch in Houston as a shelter sooner for those displaced by the disastrous flooding from Hurricane Harvey.  In Osteen’s defense, he probably thought there’s no point in dirtying up his church while there’s still a possibility open that someone…

Seattle, Eclipsed

In Port Orchard, Washington, the neighborhood known as Manchester sits right on the Puget Sound. Manchester has a great state park (we walk there a couple of times a week), and a sweet little rural waterfront that includes a public boat ramp and a floating dock. (With 15-foot tides, docks that can move are a necessity.) Manchester also boasts the smallest library I’ve ever seen. Across the way from the library is a nice neighborhood restaurant and pub, and a new…

The Other Side of the Texas Story

The other side of the Texas story is somewhat personal.

I was born in San Antonio at Fort Ssm Houston Army Hospital. Though both of my psrents were in the Army at the time of my birth, I'm not a military brat by any means or stretch.

Both were honorably discharged, and before I reached my first birthday, the family had relocated to New Haven, CT, my father's birthplace and home.

My mother's branch of her family was in San Antonio where we visited when we made the…

Henny's Hollowing

Harold "Henny" Henderson uses the stage name of Henny as an homage to Henny Youngman. He makes a serviceable living on tour and I used to wonder is it really worth it going down that road if you don't make the big… Continue

President and First Lady’s Hurricane Outfits Cause Stir

President and First Lady’s Hurricane Outfits Cause Stir:  After landing in Texas to tour the hurricane devastation, the President and First Lady caused a bit of a stir with his country club casual wardrobe and her silk bomber jacket and “CFM pumps.”  Wait a minute, that’s not fair!  I think the President and First Lady have a pretty good sense of what to wear in the midst of total carnage and devastation.  I mean, they move about the White House every single…

Guest Post: MSNBC’s Katy Tur Calls Out Ted Cruz’s Hypocrisy For Opposing Hurricane Sandy Relief

By Rebecca Shapiro, Huffington Post

"It’s not really political sniping, senator.”

MSNBC correspondent Katy Tur shut down Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Monday night for saying critics calling him out for opposing a 2012 relief package to aid the victims of Hurricane Sandy were engaging in “political sniping.”

“It’s not really political sniping,” Tur interrupted. “These are people who needed money and who needed funding right after that storm."

As the…

We Are The World

Yesterday's cautionary tale of dog ownership began thus:

Perhaps the defining characteristic of humans is the drive to divide. We classify just about everything we know, or just think we know, about the world into, generally, two groups. Us and them. Catholics and Protestants.

I didn't know then that Gina Kolata would take up the theme today. Hers is not the first news report I've…
