Midsummer's Walk ~ a photo essay (OS Archives 2011)

At the top of our street there is a beautiful walk, one of my favorite choices for the now-daily routine. There is something about starting out from home and heading straight uphill that acts as an excellent warm up for my sometimes-reluctant muscles and mind.

Today I have company along. As our strides fall into a rhythm, Husband, Kona the dog, and I steadily pass rectangles of homes and yards that make up our mostly…

a play in one act-- nanatehay, prodigal son, and Bob Vila (moi)

A random thought: I totally understand why many former OS contributors now contribute at fictionique.com. I tip a tin cup (if only I had a silver chalice!) to Lisa Neal and Candace Mann! It's an arty environment, mostly devoid of the negativity often found here at OS, some of that being my negativity. But, since I rarely, if ever, write fiction, I don't feel like I would fit in there. If I had the ambition,…

What I Did on Fathers' Day

originally posted June 19, 2011 on Open Salon

and no, I'm not inclined to go look for the picture

 My picture is online today

I dare not tell you where

Because I'm dressed up all in drag

And I am sporting orange hair.

My daughter said, this Fathers' Day,

As I unwrapped my gift:

"There's a contest. Win us tickets

To a show by Taylor Swift."

My wife offered me a photo to go with…

The Way Out of Carnegie Hall (move & repost)

Back in the late sixties, I was a quiet, studious junior high school student who spent much of her free time practicing her piano and her violin. Okay, surely some of that statement is true. Some days, all of it is true. The day I was kicked out of Carnegie Hall by Leopold Stowkowski himself, none of it was true. I was too busy being a loud , giggly, smartass teenager.

I was born in Brooklyn and grew up in the Long Island suburbs of New York. The piano was my mother’s, bought for her…

Shaving the Cat (move & repost)

When Smudge first joined our family, her fur had been sadly neglected for a long time. Smudge is a dilute tortoiseshell, which means her coat contains a variety of colors when you look closely, including black, brown, pale apricot and white. In general she has an overall sooty gray appearance with spots of pink. Her fur is on the long side but she’s not much of a shedder. I can wear a black sweater, pick her up and cuddle her, and you’d never see any evidence of that. I consider that a bonus…

How Smudge Adopted Us (move & repost)

January, 2009. We had driven across the country from New York to Washington for the second time in four months. The first trip was reconnaissance; we had rented an apartment sight unseen and packed a trailer and our pickup truck for the preliminary trip. If we liked the Puget Sound community we had set out for, we…

a small army of oddballs

Finally! The stars aligned just so, sending a combination of decent weather (although suddenly HOT) and free time for all involved. Myself, V the good girlfriend, brother Jeff, and son Eli headed out Friday afternoon for two days of camping, boating, fishing, frisbee, tubing and uh, relaxation, yes... at my favorite local spot, Melvern Lake, south of Topeka Kansas.

At the last minute E asked if his buddy Nick could tag along, and I of course said "sure." Then as we…

Taking the Tel Aviv Exit on the New Jersey Turnpike

originally published June 3, 2011 on Open Salon. This explains why Israel feels vulnerable in geographical terms an American should be able to understand.

Let's try a geographic exercise. Picture Israel's neighborhood in the Middle East as if it were on the East Coast of the US. Israel is about the size of New Jersey, so we'll put it where New Jersey is. The Mediterranean is west of Israel and the Atlantic is east of New Jersey so, to make the model work better…
