May is Prader-Willi Awareness Month

A young boy called the police in the middle of the night, telling them his home had been invaded and his entire family killed.  The intruders were still in the house but he had hidden in the bathroom, so far avoiding detection.

Imagine his mother's surprise when she stepped out…

Fighter Planes, Video Games, and my Brother's Father (OS Archives 2012)

The sounds of air battle were loud, we could hardly hear ourselves talk over the noise of the video game the boys were playing upstairs in their grandmother's bedroom. Don, my (twice widowed) mother's third husband, offered to go upstairs and check on them, to get them to tone it down.

"I'll go with you," offered Mom.

"Sure, Pat."

We all knew Mom was just worried about Don getting upstairs unscathed with his ever-present 50-foot long spaghetti noodle of oxygen…

The Parable of the Evil of Root

On the perversion of Atonement into Obedience

In the Fair town of Fairborn there is fairness in the air. Some would say that the fair air is because of the vast quantities of air forced through the jet engines at the forced air base, (Wright Patterson) the largest forced air base in the world.

Some would say that the air of fairness…

A Tiny Peek at Horrors Unspoken of (OS Archives 2012)

Today is my Freedom Day.

The day I left

So long ago, another world ago,

Magic Words

Sometimes I seem to best express myself when I just start typing, Today I don't have time to do anything else, so I'll hope this comes out ok and try to smooth out a finished product later.

This is a sort of mini- Chautauqua demonstration using a string of postings that Koshersalaami and I did over the weekend.…

Chautauqua- continued discussion of gay marriage

This is a continuation of posts that Kosher and I have been doing over the weekend. The series of posts and responses represents to me, the sort of thing that I would call "Chautauqua"ie ideas put forth and freely "taken out for a walk" to be explored and commented on by any who wish to join the exploration. Any comments on what you see as "Chautauqua" are more than appreciated.

You Ignorant Slut (OS Archives 2012)

Long ago, when my mother once remarked, "You look blowsy" I thought she meant 'vibrant, bright-colored, gyspy-like.'

0514121045

I distinctly remember the event:  I was in my late teens and finally daring to wear on a date the Forties-inspired, brightly printed bandeau halter with long, flowing skirt I'd secretly tried on in my room close to two dozen times.…

Datum - A gift of information

I was in my car this afternoon for a short drive, and I happened to hear an exchange between conservative talk show host Mark Davis and a caller who professed to be a lesbian., concerning gay marriage.

The caller said that she was perfectly happy with the notion of “Civil Union” instead of Gay Marriage, so long as they were legally equivalent and conferred the same rights and benefits. She said she understood the problem some people had with the term “Marriage” being altered…

The Gift

originally published May 13, 2012 on Open Salon, the second of a pair of posts, the first of which is called Dirty Hands. This one is a fictional version of the dilemma outlined in the previous post. As I said in the introduction to that one, the reaction surprised me because a lot of readers didn't see the dilemma in the post. Don't ask me how they missed it; I don't know.

I found my last post somewhat misunderstood by a lot of my…

Authority and Morality II

MAY 13, 2012 8:41AM

kosher has done a new post that is an enlargement of his Post on "Dirty Hands"

http://open.salon.com/blog/koshersalaami/2012/05/12/the_gift

in the interest of explaining my position as a "Warrior" (non-verbal) constituent of the congressman, i made this comment, which I present here as a small exploration of the feeling of…

Authority and Morality

I'm having a little trouble getting in the state of mind necessary to write the sort Comprehensible Nonsense  parable that I want as a companion piece to "Little Ms Deeds", so I am still working on The Parable of the Evil of Root", I hope you will bear with me, but I find myself with some thoughts on authority that Kosher raised by his posting at :…

Dirty Hands

originally posted May 10, 2012 on Open Salon. This is one of a pair of posts. This is the non-fiction part. It is followed by a fiction portion called The Gift.

The reaction to this pair of posts shocked me. I wrote about a political and moral dilemma but a lot of readers didn't see one. I can't exactly figure out how they didn't, but they didn't.

It's extremely difficult to keep your hands clean if you're politically involved, damned near impossible…

Parable of the Golden Elephant

One day, a longtime friend comes to you and says, “My friend, I am sick. I am dying. Quickly. Since I have no family, I wish to give to you personally my most treasured possession.” You are handed a golden elephant statuette of considerable size and weight.

“This elephant has seen me through the darkest days of my life; when no matter how little I had, I knew that if I did not resort to selling the elephant, then I was still a wealthy man."

Your friend soon passes into the…
