Why Entitlements Aren't The Problem

originally posted May 30, 2011 on Open Salon. The Lake analogy. This is another take on 1-Alligator.

As I sometimes do, I'm going to use an analogy to make a point. This analogy has its problems, but I'm hoping it helps anyway. This bears a certain resemblance to a previous analogy I've used but, in actuality, they're unrelated.

Imagine a lake. Like a swimming pool, our lake has a shallow end and a deep end and progresses continuously from one to the other. Our lake is…

The Gender Free Baby (OS Archives 2011)

In the news this week was a story of a couple from Canada, who gave birth to their third child four months ago, a child they named "Storm."  The parents already have two boys, ages five, and two. New baby Storm's gender, on the other hand, is a mystery.

Storm is being raised as a gender-free baby.

When I heard about this couple, I had to smile.  "Naive young things" I thought.

As the day went on, this news story stuck with me and my mind meandered back twenty…

An Armageddon Love Song (OS Archives 2011)

Armageddon?  I'm not afraid.

Here's a love song for my Open Salon friends -- just in case!

...although, not everyone will fit in my bed, and the lovemaking will be platonic grooving to tunes....

Everything's the Same (OS Archives 2011)

This year, there won't be a last-minute rush to get a Mother's Day card out for you, just like there hasn't been a rush for the last eight years. You did keep the cards your grandchildren sent you each year, I know, I found them. Sister's kids were much better at this card sending than my kids were, clearly a reflection on the clever Mom who got them to write.

This year, I probably won't cry either, or suddenly disappear right in front of my family's eyes, as a memory with…

I Will Go to Imperial Beach: Seeing “John from Cincinnati”

What does it mean for an atheist to write that a one-season television series can serve as a novena against genocide, if only it is watched?  This is what I’m saying HBO’s 2007 surf drama “John from Cincinnati” is: a 9-day 10-hour prayer for the intention of preventing a massacre of the world’s Muslims, by breaking the fever of the so-called developed world that has held sway since 9/11 and exhibited itself in the celebratory responses to the death of Osama bin Laden.

As an atheist,…

My Ultimate 9/11 Conspiracy Theory

originally written May 4, 2011 on Open Salon

I was kidding. Jack Heart thinks I'm close.

This post started life as a comment I wrote on Old New Lefty's blog. It is expanded here with his permission.

In the mid 1960's, an extremely wealthy oilman bought a magnificent penthouse in lower Manhattan. It was on the top floor of an elegant building. The penthouse was spacious, with tall ceilings, but its crowning glory was its view: a Southern…
