The Con Man and the Carpet Bomber

Let’s start with a quick quiz. True or false, Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump, at some point or another, has said each of the following:

What if Trump had been born into a different family?

Trump fits the bill for the observations the late former Texas Governor Ann Richards made on G.W. Bush.

"He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth!" Also, "He was born on third base and thinks he hit a…

"VALIANT PATTY DUKE" - The Brightest Star Of Them All! I know - I WAS THERE!

File:Patty Duke 1975.JPG

As I remember her

Patty Duke

Not a funny one this time - but soon.

In July 1970, I crossed paths with Academy Award Winner Patty Duke during one of her highs.  Never knowing there were any lows; it was eye-opening, if…

Israeli Immoral Exceptionalism

I sometimes talk about Israeli Immoral Exceptionalism. It's my own term, though I won't guarantee that no one else has ever come up with it independently. In case you don't find the…

Punishment For Abortions!!!??

I got so mad at Trump for saying that if abortions became illegal again women who had them anyway would need to be punished that I had horrible nightmares. He has a talent for distilling an issue down to the basics and he really did that this time. ie...  Women are demonized for not…

Tattoos Find Favor Among Busy CPAs at Tax Time

CHICAGO.  Sheryl Wilkins, a senior tax manager at a mid-sized accounting firm, is dreading next month’s tax filing crunch.

“It ruins your life,” she says.  “You put on weight from the late-night pizza and you get wrinkles from lack of sleep.”  So she’s preparing with a body modification she hopes will make her more efficient–tattooing the tax code on her arms.

“1031 like-kind exchanges?  I’ll have your answer in a jiffy!”

“I waste a lot…

Is Trump Winging It?

Meaning of 'winging it':

"To do something  in an impromptu manner, improvising, with little preparation."

"Authors have long used 'wing' as a verb and referred to birds that 'winged their way' and later, metaphorically, to time, love etc 'winging its way' to a recipient. That's not the 'winging it' we are concerned with here though, which has nothing to do with wings with feathers. This expression might also be thought to be derived from 'on a wing…

Nurse Who Took Pics of Unconscious Patient’s Penis Surrenders License

Nurse Who Took Pics of Unconscious Patient’s Penis Surrenders License:  Kristen Johnson, a nurse at Upstate University Hospital, who was convicted of taking photos of an unconscious patient’s penis with her iPhone and sending them to co-workers, has surrendered her nursing license to New York authorities.  In her defense, her last name is Johnson, so there’s always the possibility that she just assumed sending photographs of someone’s "Johnson" was like…

No humans are native to the Americas.

Everybody who lives in the Americas today either came here personally, or is descended from someone who did, or who was dragged here against their will.

The people who live in this hemisphere are adventurers, people who want a better life for themselves and their families, explorers, pioneers, and survivors.

We can discover where people came from by looking at the DNA in their mitochondria. Mitochondria are transmitted by eggs only.…

Bunco Squad Busts Bogus Poetry Contest Ring

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.  This city across the Charles River from Boston is so thick with poets “that you can’t throw a brick in Harvard Square without hitting one,” according to Sergeant Jim Hampy of the Cambridge Police Department’s Bunco Squad.  “I know ’cause we tried it one day and nearly killed a neo-formalist/symbolist outside Grolier’s,” a bookshop here that stocks only poetry.

“I think he’s…

Patti Duke Died

She was my age and had a septic reaction to a bowel obstruction.  I feel close to her in this crazy way that fame brings someone into our hearts even tho we never met.  Her performance in the movie Miracle Worker was riveting.  She had energy and spirit.

A Card in the Spokes

When we were kids, we used to get a playing card (or a baseball card, if it was not a “good” one) and a clothespin, and pin the card to the spokes of a bicycle. It made such a cool noise when you rode it!

Last night, I was reminded of those long-ago days when my car suddenly…

Grumpy Gut

Can the bacteria in your gut determine your mood?  I think it takes more than that to get me down but I like the saying "You are what you eat.".  I am happier when I eat some bread and am not hungry.   My granddaughter can get in grumpy moods but it seems to me it is a combination of not eating…

Politics as the Unusual: Some Interesting Numbers for the Bern and HRC

NPR reported some interesting numbers about how the Democratic Presidential campaign may play out between now and the convention: Despite the math, Bernie Sanders has already won.

"Sanders won with 82 percent in Alaska, 70 percent in Hawaii and 72 percent in Washington. That Washington margin was even bigger than the Sanders campaign expected — and significant,…

Dating Over 60 Even If You're Sally Field

So I got to see "Hello, My Name is Doris," the new indie film I'd read about in Elle magazine.  It brought Sally Field out of an hiatus it seems, and with it, addressing women of a certain age dating into the forefront.

Here's the trailer for the film:
