Prairie Grit

"In all of us there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage. To know who we are and where we came from … "  Alex Haley,  Roots (1976)

As a young farm lad growing up on the Canadian prairies, I looked forward to visits from my grandfather. He was a good storyteller, with a sense of humour and a caring way.

The known ancestors of Alfred Nathaniel Elmgren were  farmers in the Elmsboda parish of Sweden and they were of the Lutheran faith. His parents emigrated to…

A Canadian Writer's Journey

Since 1981 the Saskatoon Public Library has had a writer in residence program. The 32nd incumbent is David Poulsen. Among the many accomplished writers in residence from the past are Yann Martel, the author of the Life of Pi, and his wife Alice Kuipers. They have lived in Saskatoon for the past ten years.

Throughout his diverse career David Poulsen has been a teacher, an actor, a rodeo clown, a rodeo broadcaster(this will be his 27th year at the…

Enchanted by Quotations

Quotes have always held a fascination for me. As a young lad growing up on a farm in a sparsely populated region of Saskatchewan, I could hardly wait for the monthly Reader's Digest to arrive. The magazine contained many concise and pithy aphorisms and sayings which I savoured.

In 1980, I read the 22,500 quotes in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. This book was first published in 1855 by John Bartlett. The collection is culled and updated about ever ten years. The 2012 version…

Quotes on Writing

I have a lust for writing. It's almost orgasmic. But wait, there's something running down my leg. Perhaps its ink?

Since posting my first article on a writing site in 2012,  I have become real keen on learning how to write better. One of the many things I have done to improve my writing has been to read insightful quotes about the craft of writing. This has been an enjoyable and fulfilling experience.  A few of my favourite quotes  on writers and writing…

With any new site, we understand that finding your way around can be a bit daunting. To help you use our site, we have a few resources and tips, all of which can be found on pages under the Support tab in your top menu bar. They are:

FAQ- here you can find some quick answers to general questions, questions about privacy and about site features.

Site News, Tips & Tricks - this is our forum where you can find tips on using the site, news about site changes and other information from the staff and other members.

Our Terms Of Service and Our Copyright Policy can also be found under the Support tab.

You may also find additional help by going to chat and asking another member. Chat can be found in 2 place: There is a CHAT link in your top menu which will open chat in your browser.

The other option for opening chat is to use the small tabs at the bottom of most pages. The tab named "Opium Den" (our chat name) will open the in a small pop up window at the bottom of the screen. This window can also be resized or 'popped-out' and used as a separate window.

There is a "Members Online" tab on the bottom of your page too. This will show which other members are logged in (logged in does not mean they are active in the chat, simply they are logged in to the site). There is a small speaker icon which will allow you to adjust the chat beeps which many prefer to turn off or down when not actively chatting.

We have many excellent features and tools here. While it may seem overwhelming at first, the basics of posting and commenting are simple and before too long we hope you will feel comfortable and at home.

Bang around, explore, write, comment and most of all have fun!
