"The popular response is to return hate for hate and that's what the political people will proffer. But that just creates more violence. It's not worth anybody's time to counter-protest the flat earth society and let them put hate in…"

Agreed, with one or two qualifiers. We R fucked, have been for quite some time, if you believe what Sheldon Wolin says in Democracy, Inc, and it's kinda hard not to if you have a couple brain cells to rub together. Now, as to how and why we got to where we are... do you really think the American people are self loathing? Self loathing presupposes some level of self awareness, the ability to understand why one does the things one does or at.least to understand that those things are bad, but after observing Americans for decades, my take on us is that we tend to be - in effect, when viewed collectively, even though quite a few of us are perfectly nice as individuals - smug, complacent, selfish, vicious motherfuckers and a whole lot of other stuff too, but aside from some bleating immediately after 9 1 1 to the effect of "why do they hate us?" I haven't noticed much if any handwringing or introspection about who and how we are, still less any genuine sense of guilt or self-hatred for the atrocities daily committed in our name so we can have more Bluetooth speakers and 2017 V8 Dodge Challengers and carrier battle groups and all the other rewards attendant on generating the world's grossest national product.
