Bio
You may know me as Gryfalconess from open salon. I'm an amateur writer who has been writing for several years. My big project at the moment is a novel I'm working on.
I mainly write fiction, but here I'll be posting my non-fictional (especially political) exploits, and perhaps some of my better fictional works.
Don't expect frequent updates, but I'm working on it.
If you want to see some of my fiction, you can check out my website (below), though that's on hiatus at the moment, or ask to see what I've got so far on my novel (I can always use another opinion).

Just Because I'm Right Doesn't Mean You're Wrong

Posted on May 12, 2013 at 2:43pm 2 Comments

This seems to be the season of bat-mitzvahs in my family. There was one on May 27th and there was another this past weekend. Personally, I'm Jewish, but I don't believe in it and as such, I don't go to services often. At least I usually don't.

I was at the first bat-mitzvah when I noticed something interesting in one of the footnotes about the Torah portion. It mentioned how at the time the Torah was written (somewhere around 1300 BCE), when people were in another town, they would…

Day of Silence, Silenced

Posted on April 20, 2013 at 10:13am 6 Comments

Yesterday, students all across the country remained silent to raise awareness about anti-LGBT bullying. At a local middle school, however, they handed out stickers that said:

"Hello, I am not speaking today because I am participating in the Day of Silence, a vow taken to raise awareness for bullying and discrimination. My silence represents the voices of the bullied who are unable to speak up for themselves. Think about all the voices you're NOT hearing today."

There's one…

Justice and Liberty

Posted on March 25, 2013 at 8:58am 2 Comments

Without liberty, there can be no true justice. Without justice, there can be no true liberty.

While the two may seem at odds, there can't be one without the other.

Justice without liberty is a "kangaroo court," a dictatorship where unpopular opinions are squashed before they can even be heard. Tyranny, of the minority or the minority. Perhaps, it may seem peaceful on the surface, but there is always the fear of taking one step out of line. Those who are different are locked…

Not exactly the first post I had in mind, but inspiration struck...

The elections are finally over. To me at least, it felt like they would never end, between the primaries that seemed to go on forever, and the long general election. I must admit, I followed them on and off, and even when I was watching some news every day, the news I'm referring to was the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and the Colbert Report. Not exactly serious news, but they did get the information across, as silly as they may be.

That brings me to the inspiration for today's…

"Well, no, it doesn't, at least not functionally. Literally, it mostly does, because if you believe one thing and someone else believes another, you kind of have to believe they're wrong to the extent that they disagree with you, but you…"

"I assume it was essentially a political decision, since it is a bit of a controversial topic at the moment, but that doesn't make it okay."

"Excellent post. I wonder why the day couldn't be about a particular population? That's a little like saying "We can't have a Black History Month, it has to be a Human History Month," except of course the reason a Black…"

Welcome!

With any new site, we understand that finding your way around can be a bit daunting. To help you use our site, we have a few resources and tips, all of which can be found on pages under the ABOUT tab in your top menu bar. They are:

FAQ- here you can find some quick answers to general questions, questions about privacy and about site features.

Site News, Tips & Tricks - this is our forum where you can find tips on using the site, news about site changes and other information from the staff and other members.

Our Terms Of Service and Our Copyright Policy can also be found under the ABOUT tab.

You may also find additional help by going to chat and asking another member. Chat can be found in 2 place: There is a CHAT link in your top menu which will open chat in your browser.

The other option for opening chat is to use the small tabs at the bottom of most pages. The tab named "Opium Den" (our chat name) will open the in a small pop up window at the bottom of the screen. This window can also be resized or 'popped-out' and used as a separate window.

There is a "Members Online" tab on the bottom of your page too. This will show which other members are logged in (logged in does not mean they are active in the chat, simply they are logged in to the site). There is a small speaker icon which will allow you to adjust the chat beeps which many prefer to turn off or down when not actively chatting.

We have many excellent features and tools here. While it may seem overwhelming at first, the basics of posting and commenting are simple and before too long we hope you will feel comfortable and at home.

Bang around, explore, write, comment and most of all have fun!
