Goodbye to an Author: John Graves, 1920 - 2013

John Graves at Hard Scrabble

Several years ago, during an OS gathering in Chicago, I was asked by Chicago Guy which writers have influenced me the most.  It took me just a nanosecond to respond:  John Graves.  If you come from outside Texas, there is a decent chance you have not heard of Graves.  That would be a shame.

John Graves was one of the greatest writers of the second half of the twentieth century.  Now he is gone, having passed away…

I posted this on Open Salon four years ago.  With all the talk about drones and Iran and such, perhaps it's worth remembering what, exactly, can happen when terror rains down from the sky.

“He took me by the hand, as if I had been an old friend.  He told us we were too late for the morning cars to New York, and must wait until the evening, or the next morning.  He invited me to go home with him, assuring me that his wife would give me a cordial welcome.”

These are the words of a 29 year old woman named Harriett Jacobs.  She is referring to the Reverend Jeremiah Durham, whom she had just met for the first time.  In the summer of 1842, Harriett Jacobs…

RIP Senator Daniel Inouye

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 4:30pm 5 Comments

America lost a great patriot today.  Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii is dead at the age of 88.  I first became acquainted with him in 1973, during the Senate Watergate Hearings.  For the past few years he has been the longest serving member of the Senate.  His service to our country goes well beyond his time in the Senate, however.

When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Daniel Inouye was the teenaged son of first generation Japanese-American immigrants.  He was living in Honolulu when the…

Welcome!

With any new site, we understand that finding your way around can be a bit daunting. To help you use our site, we have a few resources and tips, all of which can be found on pages under the ABOUT tab in your top menu bar. They are:

FAQ- here you can find some quick answers to general questions, questions about privacy and about site features.

Site News, Tips & Tricks - this is our forum where you can find tips on using the site, news about site changes and other information from the staff and other members.

Our Terms Of Service and Our Copyright Policy can also be found under the ABOUT tab.

You may also find additional help by going to chat and asking another member. Chat can be found in 2 place: There is a CHAT link in your top menu which will open chat in your browser.

The other option for opening chat is to use the small tabs at the bottom of most pages. The tab named "Opium Den" (our chat name) will open the in a small pop up window at the bottom of the screen. This window can also be resized or 'popped-out' and used as a separate window.

There is a "Members Online" tab on the bottom of your page too. This will show which other members are logged in (logged in does not mean they are active in the chat, simply they are logged in to the site). There is a small speaker icon which will allow you to adjust the chat beeps which many prefer to turn off or down when not actively chatting.

We have many excellent features and tools here. While it may seem overwhelming at first, the basics of posting and commenting are simple and before too long we hope you will feel comfortable and at home.

Bang around, explore, write, comment and most of all have fun!
