Profile Information

Phibby Venable's work has been published in 2River, Poetrybay, Southern Ocean Review, Sow's Ear, Voices, the Appalachian Journal and various other national & international magazines. Two chapbooks: On White Top, published by Poetrybay, George Wallace, editor, and Indian Wind Song by People Inc. The proceeds of Indian Wind Song were used to help low income Appalachian families with indoor plumbing and home repairs. Venable won the Virginia Water Project Award, and was nominated for the governor’s award for Volunteer Excellence. She is active in animal rescue. She was nominated by Goldfish Press for the Pushcart Prize in 2009, and in 2010 by Quill and Parchment Press. Her four poetry books include: Blue Cold Morning, Blue Water Poems,There Is A White Girl, & Blue Cold Morning – First Collection Of Poems. Her work appears in several anthologies: The Kaleidoscope Chronicles Poetry in Three Voices by Phibby Venable, Emily Burns, Sel Whiteley In Our Own Words, by Marlow Peerse Weaver The Battered Suitcase, May 2009 and Travelin’ Music, A Poetic Tribute to Woody Guthrie, Dorothy Alexander, editor.

Nothing but valley lights in the black -

but it is morning by the clock, and the rain

clouds gather their power in the dark

Always a number of things to keep

on the tips of my fingers

Fledgling being number one...

In this reckless place

I keep a clear window

with a miraculous view

Most days I see my reflection

Friendly and flying around

the rivers of this room --

the red foxes and the brown…

    the way we slip into one another's lives with an aside

    our notes left on the side table, still warm with old wounds

    some beauty is blue, but there is a brilliant golden hue...

    that swells behind our tracing clouds

    we leave a mark, playful or cold

    there is a certain gratitude, when someone loves us,

    good or ill,…

As Time Passes

As time passes, and all that I thought valuable leaves me,

stone borders waste and fade as I fold my expectations

into fog and put them away

I move toward music, and listen more

to the individuality of birds

A small radiance grows in simple places

and the smell of cut grass & fragrant trees appeal to…
