Christmas Mexico 1993

Posted on March 4, 2017 at 12:13pm 0 Comments

Shemp Howard of the 3 Stooges had a trademark noise that he made when his character was extremely scared, a variation on “Heebeebeebee” shortened or lengthened to the comic moment, sometimes accompanied by his hair standing on end. It’s the noise I had in mind for the end of the following, written to a friend years ago, hoping to make him laugh.

Christmas 1993

I'm cheapin out and staying put for the holidays. Maybe I'll cut out down to Mexico for a few days, do some…

Absinthe Political Vision on Republicans February 9, 2016

Posted on February 10, 2016 at 1:26am 8 Comments

I was guzzling some absinthe and had a political visionary experience with quasi-prophetic overtones. I wrote down what I could before the words dissolved in the ether:

  1. Come Republican convention time it will be Kasich v Jeb. They could even be the R ticket.
  2. There's something repugnant about Cruz's face that no one trusts and this will start hurting him.
  3. Rubio is small potatoes and people are already seeing that.
  4. Carson should withdraw with his…

This Reporter Wept

Posted on September 10, 2015 at 6:30pm 2 Comments

Has anyone ever actually said “This reporter wept” in a report, whether on video or in print? Probably not. With the effort at objectivity displayed by the use of “This reporter” instead of the simpler “I”, the phrase itself would dilute (with tears?) that objectivity. Plus, for some people it can’t help but allude to the Christian Gospel verse “Jesus wept” and thereby come off as pretentious or irreligious.

Or maybe it just sounds pretentious even without the allusion? Like something…

The End of Silence

Posted on July 6, 2015 at 8:08pm 15 Comments

An FB friend’s post on Facebook bothered me enough to where I left an abrasive comment, which I almost never do, especially on political matters, since a distressing number of my way-back “friends” have inexplicably become hard-right Republican types with white racist sympathies, and it would be exhausting and pointless to actually react to everything that gets tossed out. I want to enjoy the time I have left, not waste it arguing with people who don’t ever seem to actually…

Welcome!

With any new site, we understand that finding your way around can be a bit daunting. To help you use our site, we have a few resources and tips, all of which can be found on pages under the ABOUT tab in your top menu bar. They are:

FAQ- here you can find some quick answers to general questions, questions about privacy and about site features.

Site News, Tips & Tricks - this is our forum where you can find tips on using the site, news about site changes and other information from the staff and other members.

Our Terms Of Service and Our Copyright Policy can also be found under the ABOUT tab.

You may also find additional help by going to chat and asking another member. Chat can be found in 2 place: There is a CHAT link in your top menu which will open chat in your browser.

The other option for opening chat is to use the small tabs at the bottom of most pages. The tab named "Opium Den" (our chat name) will open the in a small pop up window at the bottom of the screen. This window can also be resized or 'popped-out' and used as a separate window.

There is a "Members Online" tab on the bottom of your page too. This will show which other members are logged in (logged in does not mean they are active in the chat, simply they are logged in to the site). There is a small speaker icon which will allow you to adjust the chat beeps which many prefer to turn off or down when not actively chatting.

We have many excellent features and tools here. While it may seem overwhelming at first, the basics of posting and commenting are simple and before too long we hope you will feel comfortable and at home.

Bang around, explore, write, comment and most of all have fun!
