 “lest we forget…”

Rudyard Kipling

Recessional (poem)

Monday, May 26th is designated as Memorial Day this year. May 30th, is the actual Memorial Day, the holiday of my childhood. They may have made it a “Monday” holiday (no matter the date of the week) many years ago – along with others, e.g. Abraham Lincolnwas really born on the 16th of February, Thomas Jefferson on the 13th of February, and George…

November 11, 2013 (Updated from appearance on another writing site)

In the United States, today is Veterans' Day. Tonight in my town, the second largest parade of the year will take place whether it is wet or dry, cold or pleasant (although last year, for the first time ever, it was rained out). It is the Veterans' Day Parade. It is always held on November 11th, regardless of what day of the week that is.

It just so happens, here in 2013, that November 11th falls on a Monday, there have been moves over the years to turn this into a fixed…

My Granddaughter’s Terrorible First Day of Second Grade

How the First Day of Second Grade started!!

I have decided to lead with the good news, my granddaughter is safe, and sound and I thank God that she is. Until she actually arrived home, she enjoyed the bus experience so much; she has asked to ride the bus to school on occasion and with the condition…

Helen Thomas died this past week. I met her in 2003. She came to Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE) as a speaker for the Arts and Issues series. I was at a Trivia Night at church a couple of weeks before. Our table was doing OK, but suddenly my name was called during a break as a winner of an attendance prize. Someone, most likely one of the professors from SIUE, had donated the tickets and I chose them over many other inviting items. I haven’t been able to remember…

With any new site, we understand that finding your way around can be a bit daunting. To help you use our site, we have a few resources and tips, all of which can be found on pages under the ABOUT tab in your top menu bar. They are:

FAQ- here you can find some quick answers to general questions, questions about privacy and about site features.

Site News, Tips & Tricks - this is our forum where you can find tips on using the site, news about site changes and other information from the staff and other members.

Our Terms Of Service and Our Copyright Policy can also be found under the ABOUT tab.

You may also find additional help by going to chat and asking another member. Chat can be found in 2 place: There is a CHAT link in your top menu which will open chat in your browser.

The other option for opening chat is to use the small tabs at the bottom of most pages. The tab named "Opium Den" (our chat name) will open the in a small pop up window at the bottom of the screen. This window can also be resized or 'popped-out' and used as a separate window.

There is a "Members Online" tab on the bottom of your page too. This will show which other members are logged in (logged in does not mean they are active in the chat, simply they are logged in to the site). There is a small speaker icon which will allow you to adjust the chat beeps which many prefer to turn off or down when not actively chatting.

We have many excellent features and tools here. While it may seem overwhelming at first, the basics of posting and commenting are simple and before too long we hope you will feel comfortable and at home.

Bang around, explore, write, comment and most of all have fun!
