Musings On Starting Over

Family life. What a great term. It’s shorthand for ‘bedrock’ and ‘comfort food’ and ‘security’ and gathering in the family room for board games and popcorn and G-rated movies and polite children and energetic parents all resting on the foundation of a well-diversified stock portfolio, college funds begun in the womb, regular contributions to the 401k.

Seashore vacations. Mom and dad getting away a few times of the year to someplace more exotic. Church on Sundays - most of the time.…

A long time ago yesterday (actually Monday but it seems sooner) I was deliriously happy, and content too, or as content as someone with my nervous disposition can ever be. My love was back after being in the healing clutches of the healthcare system for over a week, I could still convince myself that my mother might live into triple digits and all of us and the children too were safe at home, snug in our spacious if slightly messy abode.…

Movie Review: Jurassic World

Posted on June 14, 2015 at 11:00pm 13 Comments

The last three movies I’ve seen have been loud. Really, really loud. Fury Road. American Sniper. And most recently, Jurassic World.

It was two-plus hours of unremitting exposure to screaming, roaring, shouting, shooting and giant lizard tail-slapping sounds.

“DID YOU LIKE IT,” I asked James as we staggered out of the Movie Tavern.

We collected my 15-year-old baby Dianna, and her friend Haley…

Chickens In The 'Hood

Someday Mariclaire, my 25-year-old college student daughter wants to own a working farm.  The kind that's the antithesis of the monolithic, corporate-beholden, factory farm kind of farm. Besides being against everything that kind of operation represents to her, it would take a lot of work and she wants to be a teacher too.

Teaching all day will take time away from tilling the land and tending the livestock but on the plus side, will give her valuable experience in animal management…

I am so sorry that you, your family and the world lost such a fine man. I admired him from the first time I noticed him on Open Salon. He was one of the first to comment on my poems and I always was happy when he did. I am happy that he found you to love and I can see by his comments here that he did love you and your family. I know it doesn't make anything better, but I will miss him as will all the rest of us that he honored by his knowledgeable and humorous comments. Rest in Peace James, knowing you loved and were loved in return.
